Nissan confirms deal to supply powertrains to Andretti in Gen4 era

Nissan confirmed on Friday (24) a multi-year deal to supply powertrains to Andretti starting in the 2026/27 Formula E season, when the championship introduces its Gen4 era. The partnership brings together two of the series’ most established teams and expands the Japanese manufacturer’s presence on the grid. The contract spans the entire lifecycle of the upcoming technical regulations.

The announcement was made in Tokyo, host to this weekend’s double-header and the first night race in Formula E history in the Japanese capital. Under the new agreement, Nissan will supply four cars on the grid. The Japanese brand had been without a customer team since McLaren’s departure at the end of last season.

In addition to supplying powertrain hardware, Nissan and Andretti revealed they will engage in extensive technical collaboration throughout the Gen4 era, sharing engineering expertise and development data to maximize overall performance.

The Japanese manufacturer highlighted that Formula E remains a cornerstone of its global electrification strategy and hailed the partnership as a major step forward in strengthening its competitive footing in the series.

“Formula E continues to play an essential role in Nissan’s global electrification strategy. Collaborating with Andretti and TWG Motorsports supports those sporting objectives while reinforcing our commitment to the championship. We look forward to leveraging both parties’ expertise to achieve success on and off the track,” stated Guillaume Cartier, Nissan Performance Officer.

Andretti also celebrated the deal, pointing to the Japanese manufacturer’s winning track record in the series. “Formula E remains a vital component of our global motorsport strategy, and partnering with Nissan for the Gen4 era represents a significant leap forward for Andretti,” said Jill Gregory, President of Andretti Global.

“Nissan has firmly established itself as a front-runner in the championship, and we believe this partnership provides a solid foundation to fight for race wins and titles,” she added.

According to Tommaso Volpe, Team Principal of Nissan Formula E, securing a top-tier customer team will prove crucial for accelerating technical development during the championship’s next generation.

“We are delighted to welcome Andretti as our customer team for the Gen4 era. Formula E is becoming increasingly competitive, and having a strong partner is vital to maximizing both track performance and technical development. Andretti is one of the most successful names in motorsport, and we look forward to building a powerful partnership,” Volpe noted.

Meanwhile, Andretti Team Principal Roger Griffiths pointed to Nissan’s motorsport legacy and electric vehicle expertise as key factors behind the deal.

“Nissan boasts over 80 years of racing heritage, with wins and championships across various disciplines—including the reigning Formula E Drivers’ World Championship. As electric vehicle pioneers, they have amassed vast technical expertise and proven how competitive they are throughout their Formula E tenure. These attributes align perfectly with Andretti’s core philosophy, and we are incredibly proud to launch this partnership ahead of the highly anticipated Gen4 era,” Griffiths concluded.
