Hamilton and Antonelli under stewards' investigation following Hungarian GP qualifying incidents

Lewis Hamilton and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will have to explain their actions to the FIA stewards following incidents in the closing stages of Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix this Saturday (July 25). The Ferrari driver is accused of impeding Oscar Piastri on a flying lap, while the championship leader is under scrutiny for a potential yellow flag violation.

Piastri voiced his frustration with Hamilton over the radio and in the media pen. “The yellow flag [caused by Max Verstappen’s spin] didn’t cost me. It was Lewis not looking in his mirrors,” snapped the Australian, who ended the session fifth, while driver #44 secured second.

Hamilton, meanwhile, stated in his post-session interview that he couldn’t tell for sure whether he had impeded the McLaren driver. Similar impeding incidents typically result in a 3-place grid penalty.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s incident stems from Verstappen’s spin, which triggered yellow flags in Sector 3. The crux of the investigation is that the Italian managed to improve his lap time, with broadcast footage showing Kimi passing car #3 while it was stranded in the run-off area. If the stewards rule that he failed to slow down adequately under yellows, he could also face a grid drop.
