News Summary

Márquez entered the Malaysian weekend with a ten-point advantage after the Australian Grand Prix was cancelled due to poor weather and medical helicopter restrictions. The Ducati rider added nine points at Sepang by finishing second behind Pedro Acosta, while Martín was unable to compete because of the injury sustained at Phillip Island.

Acosta won the Malaysian sprint ahead of Márquez and Marco Bezzecchi, taking his second sprint victory of the season. The KTM rider moved to 275 points, remaining fourth in the standings, while Bezzecchi consolidated third with 322 points.

Márquez moves 19 points clear as Martín’s injury disrupts title challenge

The championship battle has changed significantly over the past two weekends. Martín arrived at the Australian GP leading Márquez by two points, but a crash during the Phillip Island sprint left the Aprilia rider with a fractured right forearm.

Márquez won that sprint to move ten points ahead. Sunday’s race was subsequently cancelled because of severe weather, preventing the Ducati rider from extending his advantage before the championship travelled to Malaysia.

Martín attempted to return at Sepang but continued to experience pain and withdrew from the remainder of the weekend before qualifying. His absence leaves Márquez with another opportunity to extend his advantage in Sunday’s Grand Prix.

With three Grands Prix remaining after Malaysia, including Qatar, Portugal and Valencia, a maximum of 111 points will be available following Sunday’s race. Márquez, Martín, Bezzecchi and Acosta remain mathematically capable of winning the title before the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Bezzecchi trails Márquez by 52 points after taking third in the sprint, while Acosta is 99 points behind. Ai Ogura, fourth in Saturday’s race, occupies fifth place in the championship with 265 points, 109 behind the leader.

Aprilia Racing leads Teams’ Championship by 133 points

Although Ducati leads the Riders’ Championship through Márquez, Aprilia Racing has built a substantial advantage in the Teams’ Championship.

The factory Aprilia squad has accumulated 677 points through Martín and Bezzecchi, placing it 133 ahead of Ducati Lenovo, which has 544. Trackhouse Aprilia occupies third with 501 points, underlining the competitiveness of the RS-GP26 across both factory and satellite operations.

KTM moved to 386 points following Acosta’s victory and Binder’s seventh-place finish in the sprint, while Gresini Ducati and VR46 Ducati are tied on 316 points.

Gresini’s Malaysian weekend was particularly frustrating after Álex Márquez secured pole position ahead of his brother Marc but crashed out while leading the sprint. VR46, meanwhile, collected points through Di Giannantonio’s fifth-place finish.

Honda HRC remains seventh with 147 points, followed by Tech3 KTM on 140 and LCR Honda on 129. Yamaha’s factory team has 99 points, while Pramac Yamaha completes the standings with 49.

Aprilia holds narrow advantage over Ducati in Constructors’ Championship

The Constructors’ Championship remains considerably closer than the teams’ contest, with Aprilia leading Ducati by just four points after the Malaysian sprint.

Aprilia has 516 points compared with Ducati’s 512, reflecting a season in which both manufacturers have consistently challenged for victories. The two brands were level on 469 points after the Japanese Grand Prix, but Aprilia subsequently gained the upper hand.

The championship uses the highest-scoring rider from each manufacturer in each race to determine its points allocation, meaning that strong performances from several riders on the same brand of motorcycle do not automatically translate into additional constructors’ points.

Acosta’s sprint victory lifted KTM to 328 points, leaving the Austrian manufacturer third. Honda follows with 169 points, while Yamaha remains fifth with 100.

The close battle between Aprilia and Ducati adds another dimension to Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix, particularly with Martín unavailable and Bezzecchi carrying the factory Aprilia challenge against Márquez and Bagnaia.

What Marc Márquez needs to do in Sunday’s Malaysian GP

Márquez will start Sunday’s race from second on the grid, alongside pole-sitter Álex Márquez and Acosta. The Ducati rider can extend his championship advantage to as many as 44 points if he wins and Martín remains absent.

A victory would take Márquez to 399 points, while Martín would remain on 355. A second-place finish would move the championship leader to 394 points, opening a 39-point advantage.

Bezzecchi could also reduce the gap to Márquez if he finishes ahead of the Spaniard. The Aprilia rider starts fifth, behind Ogura, and will attempt to keep his title hopes alive with another strong result.
