Toto Wolff expressed confidence that George Russell can bounce back in the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes Team Principal noted that the Briton felt the impact of the car’s reliability issues alongside the strong form of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who reeled off a streak of five victories in the opening six rounds of the year.
With the arrival of the new technical regulations, expectations were fulfilled as the Silver Arrows established themselves as the benchmark team on the grid. As the more experienced driver in the lineup, the Briton was widely tipped as the title favorite, and although the championship began promisingly with a victory at the Australian GP, the campaign did not unfold as anticipated.
Since then, Russell suffered qualifying issues in China, was compromised by a safety car period in Japan, retired due to a battery failure in Canada, finished outside the points in Monaco following a Mercedes pit-stop blunder, saw his Belgian GP end on lap one, and finally faced an engine issue that crippled his start in Budapest. At the same time, the #63 driver struggled to match his Italian teammate’s raw pace on several other occasions.
“George was leading in Montreal before he had to retire. So that could have been another victory for him, which certainly would have put him in a better mindset for the following races,” Wolff said in an interview with Dutch outlet RacingNews365. The Briton has recorded victories in Australia and Austria so far this season.
“To be fair, we had an engine issue on his car that took quite a long time to diagnose, costing him two-tenths of a second per lap. After that, the pressure naturally mounted because he entered the season as the clear favorite,” Wolff continued.
“Kimi went nine races without scoring a single point last year, but this year he has been performing exceptionally well. All of a sudden, expectations shift and you find yourself on the back foot,” the Mercedes boss analyzed, backing his driver to recover. “If there is anyone capable of handling this kind of pressure, it’s George, because he is mentally very strong. The very best always manage to bounce back. So I fully believe he will do it,” he concluded.
Through 11 rounds completed in the 2026 season, Russell has accumulated 160 points, sitting third in the standings heading into the summer break. The Drivers’ World Championship lead remains with Antonelli on 219 points, while Lewis Hamilton holds second place with 169.
Formula 1 is currently on its summer break. The series resumes its 2026 season activities from August 21 to 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
