Oscar Piastri has dropped from seventh to 15th in the final classification of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix after receiving a 10-second time penalty for his collision with Arvid Lindblad. The FIA announced its decision after Sunday’s (November 1) race, ruling that the McLaren driver was responsible for the incident that sent the Racing Bulls into the tyre barriers and triggered a Safety Car.
The sanction increased Piastri’s gap to race winner Max Verstappen from 19.475s to 29.475s, dropping him eight positions and removing him from the points. The decision also promotes Franco Colapinto to seventh, Liam Lawson to eighth and Pierre Gasly to ninth.
FIA holds Piastri responsible for Lindblad collision
According to FIA stewards’ document 79, Piastri attempted to overtake Lindblad around the outside approaching Turn 1.
However, the Australian was never fully alongside the Racing Bulls driver and therefore was not entitled to claim the corner.
The stewards determined that Lindblad defended his position by releasing the brakes through Turn 1, but did not force Piastri off the circuit and left sufficient room on the outside.
The collision occurred as the cars approached Turn 2.
After reviewing video footage, onboard recordings and positioning data, the stewards concluded that Piastri could have avoided contact by moving further left after Turn 1, even if doing so required temporarily leaving the track.
The McLaren driver was consequently penalised for breaching Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2(d) of the FIA International Sporting Code.
The decision was issued at 17:56 local time, after the race had finished.
Piastri loses eight places as Colapinto and Lawson benefit
Piastri originally crossed the finish line seventh, 19.475s behind Verstappen, but the additional ten seconds left him behind Carlos Sainz and ahead of Nico Hülkenberg.
Colapinto inherits seventh place, securing six points for Alpine, while Lawson completes an extraordinary recovery from a pit-lane start to finish eighth.
Lawson had been disqualified from qualifying because of an MGU-K technical infringement, but fought through the field during Sunday’s chaotic race.
Gasly moves to ninth, giving Alpine a double points finish, while Bortoleto climbs to tenth and collects the final championship point for Audi.
Piastri’s penalty also changes the points distribution in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, with McLaren losing six points from its provisional Mexican Grand Prix total.

Revised classification calculated from the provisional finishing times and the FIA’s ten-second post-race penalty for Piastri, document 79.
McLaren loses points as Antonelli celebrates world title
The penalty compounds a difficult weekend for Piastri, who had already been eliminated in Q2 on Saturday.
The Australian recovered from 12th on the starting grid to finish seventh on the road, but his collision with Lindblad ultimately cost him the result.
The incident also ended Lindblad’s race after the Racing Bulls struck the tyre barriers.
At the front, Verstappen retained victory ahead of Hamilton and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who became Formula 1’s youngest world champion.
The FIA’s decision does not change the podium, but it alters the points awarded from seventh to tenth place and requires an update to both championship standings.
