Fernando Alonso confirmed on Thursday (23) that he will remain with Aston Martin in 2027. However, during a press conference in the Hungaroring paddock, the Spaniard stopped short of guaranteeing that his future would be as an active Formula 1 driver.

On the eve of the Hungarian GP, Alonso’s comments put an end to rumors suggesting the two-time World Champion could reunite with Flavio Briatore, who managed Alonso and led Renault during his title-winning years. The Italian currently serves as team principal at Alpine.

“I have a contract, I’m not going to change [teams],” Alonso fired back. “I’m calm. I need to figure out what I’m going to do next year and in the years following that. I feel refreshed, motivated, and fast, but I need to enjoy what I’m doing,” he added.

Echoing sentiments he expressed during the British and Belgian Grand Prix weekends, Alonso reiterated that the current generation of Formula 1 cars hasn’t been enjoyable “either to watch or to drive,” emphasizing his desire to regain that thrill inside the cockpit. According to the Spaniard, these factors will weigh heavily as he ponders his future on the grid.

“Like I said at Spa and Silverstone, it wasn’t fun driving there at all. It’s not fun to watch, and it’s not fun to drive. That’s something we’ve been repeating GP after GP,” Alonso stated.

“I think the direction we took this year has led to a point where, from a driver’s perspective, we no longer feel that same adrenaline rush behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. That’s something I’ll have to put on the table. It doesn’t depend on the team’s competitiveness, but rather on whether Formula 1 can still offer me that adrenaline,” Alonso concluded.

Formula 1 returns July 24–26 in Budapest, host of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Round 11 of the 2026 season.
