Formula 1 may be forced to begin its expected season finale at Imola before 13:00 local time if the Italian circuit replaces Abu Dhabi on the 2026 calendar.
The championship continues to assess whether the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix can proceed amid the conflict affecting the Middle East. Although both rounds remain officially scheduled, Imola has emerged as the leading contingency option for the final race on 6 December.
According to GPblog, Formula 1 is already considering a start time before 13:00 because the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari does not have permanent floodlights. Sunset in Imola is expected at approximately 16:34 on race day, leaving a restricted window in which to complete the Grand Prix safely under natural light.
That would represent a significant departure from Formula 1’s recent finale tradition. Abu Dhabi has closed every season since 2014, with the race beginning in daylight and finishing under the Yas Marina floodlights.
An Imola finale would instead require the entire race to be completed during a short winter afternoon. Starting before 13:00 would provide time for delays, safety-car periods or a red flag without risking darkness before the chequered flag.
Winter conditions force F1 to rethink traditional schedule
European Formula 1 races normally begin at approximately 15:00 local time. That schedule would be impractical at Imola in December because the sun would set less than two hours later.
A conventional 305-km Grand Prix generally lasts between 90 minutes and two hours, but an interruption could extend the event considerably. Formula 1 must therefore create enough daylight margin to restart the race if an accident, poor weather or barrier repairs cause a suspension.
The restricted window could also affect the support-race programme and pre-race ceremonies. Every track activity would need to be organised around approximately nine hours of daylight, with sunrise expected at 07:34.
Weather presents another complication. Low temperatures, rain, fog and even the possibility of snow could affect the circuit in early December. Cold asphalt would also make tyre preparation more difficult than during Imola’s previous springtime Formula 1 dates.
Imola dropped from the regular calendar after 2025, but the Italian federation has already called it the “ideal solution” for the 2026 F1 finale. Local and national authorities have been working to prepare the venue should Formula 1 activate its European contingency plan.
Imola decision remains conditional
No replacement has yet been announced. Qatar is scheduled for 27–29 November, while Abu Dhabi is due to stage the finale from 4–6 December.
The FIA has maintained that it will continue consulting governments, promoters and security authorities before deciding whether the two events can proceed. President Mohammed Ben Sulayem previously said there was no need to rush the decision, with safety remaining the governing body’s priority.
If Abu Dhabi is cancelled and Imola receives the final round, Formula 1 would conclude a season in Europe for the first time since the 1997 European GP at Jerez. The Spanish race became one of the championship’s most famous finales as Jacques Villeneuve secured the title following his collision with Michael Schumacher.
The current championship situation could add further significance to an Italian finale. Kimi Antonelli holds a 66-point lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell, creating the possibility of the season ending with a home race for the Italian driver.
For now, Abu Dhabi retains its official place as the 2026 finale. Imola’s preparations and the proposed early start remain contingency measures while Formula 1 monitors the security and logistical conditions surrounding its Middle Eastern rounds.
