Oscar Piastri and Arvid Lindblad were involved in a major accident during Sunday’s (November 1) Mexico City Grand Prix after the McLaren driver attempted to overtake the Racing Bulls around the outside of Turn 1. The two cars made contact, sending Lindblad off the circuit and into the tyre barriers at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, prompting Race Control to deploy the Safety Car.
Lindblad had been running seventh when Piastri approached the opening corner and attempted to gain a position around the outside. With limited space available, the Australian’s McLaren made contact with the Racing Bulls, destabilising Lindblad’s car.
Lindblad becomes airborne before hitting tyre barriers
The collision occurred in the heavy braking zone for Turn 1, where Piastri attempted to remain alongside Lindblad on the outside.
The McLaren struck the Racing Bulls, sending Lindblad off the racing line. The car briefly lifted from the ground before continuing into the tyre barriers beyond the corner.
The impact brought Lindblad’s race to an abrupt halt, with Race Control deploying the Safety Car to allow marshals to attend to the scene and recover the damaged vehicle.
There was no immediate confirmation of Lindblad’s physical condition or whether the stewards would investigate the incident.
The accident came during a difficult race for Piastri, who had already endured a disappointing qualifying session.
The Australian failed to reach Q3 and was classified 13th in qualifying, before moving to 12th on the revised grid following Liam Lawson’s technical disqualification.
Another Safety Car interrupts chaotic Mexican GP
The collision added another interruption to a race already marked by a major accident involving Valtteri Bottas.
The Cadillac driver suffered an apparent front-left suspension failure under braking for Turn 1, crashing into the protective barriers and prompting a Safety Car followed by a red flag.
Cadillac subsequently confirmed that Bottas exited his car without assistance and was taken to the Medical Centre for precautionary checks.
The race had also featured a controversial opening-lap battle between Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Hamilton accused Leclerc of pushing him off the track, while the FIA handed the Monegasque a five-second penalty for leaving the circuit and gaining an advantage.
The stewards had not announced a decision on the Piastri-Lindblad collision at the time of the Safety Car deployment.
