“It won’t be this weekend, but we’re going to need to accept that penalty soon,” Russell said.
The decision allows Russell to attack a circuit where Mercedes is expected to be competitive without sacrificing his starting position. It does not remove the wider problem: several components have reached their permitted seasonal limits, making a penalty effectively inevitable once another new unit is introduced.
Mercedes intends to time that change around its next power-unit specification. The team’s planned ADUO upgrade includes work on the turbo, giving Russell an incentive to combine the unavoidable grid penalty with a performance gain.
Russell refuses to surrender championship fight
Russell arrives in Baku second in the Drivers’ Championship with 211 points, 81 behind Antonelli. The Italian has won the last two Grands Prix at Monza and Madrid, taking his season total to 8 victories from 14 rounds.
Although Russell admitted after Madrid that he was no longer a realistic title contender, he adopted a more combative position in Azerbaijan.
“I’ll fight for the championship while the mathematics allow it,” he said. “I always want to take pole and win. The gap is large, but I’ll stay in the fight while I still have a chance.”
Antonelli cannot clinch the championship in Baku, regardless of the result. As the latest 2026 F1 title calculations show, Singapore is his first mathematical opportunity—but only if he dominates the opening rounds of the triple-header while Russell fails to score.
Russell recognised that his position reflects a season in which Antonelli has extracted more from the W17.
“I know I’m in this position in the championship because my performance hasn’t been good enough,” the Briton said. “We need to solve some problems, even though I’m happy with the progress.”

Russell finds confidence after difficult run
Russell said he has become increasingly comfortable with the Mercedes since the summer break, even though that improvement has not yet produced another victory.
“I’m much happier in the car over the last few races,” he explained. “Even in Madrid, despite not being able to overtake, my pace was good.”
“Oscar [Piastri] and I are dealing with similar problems. What worked in the past isn’t working now, but I’ve progressed and believe I can fight for victories again.”
Russell’s challenge is no longer simply to match Antonelli on pace. He must recover a deficit worth more than three Grand Prix victories while managing an approaching engine penalty and preventing other rivals from threatening his second place in the standings.
Antonelli has 292 points, Russell 211 and Lewis Hamilton 191. Lando Norris is only 5 points behind Hamilton, while Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen also remain within reach of the fight behind the championship leader.
