Verstappen starts from pole as Ferrari prepares two-car challenge
Verstappen arrives at Sunday’s race after an impressive Singapore weekend.
The Dutchman secured pole for Friday’s sprint qualifying before winning Saturday’s rain-affected race ahead of Hamilton and Leclerc. He subsequently took Grand Prix pole, becoming only the fifth driver in Formula 1 history to reach 50 pole positions.
The result also ended Red Bull’s 13-year wait for a Singapore Grand Prix pole, with Sebastian Vettel having last achieved the feat in 2013.
GRANDE PRÊMIO reported Verstappen’s 50th career pole and its historical significance.
Ferrari, however, has two drivers immediately behind the Red Bull.
Leclerc qualified second after overcoming braking problems, while Hamilton finished third despite struggling with oversteer during Q3.
Hamilton believes Ferrari must use both cars to put Verstappen under pressure during Sunday’s race.
“We could definitely, hopefully work as a team tomorrow to try and hold on to Max and put them under pressure,” Hamilton said.
“I think that’s the only way it’s going to be.”
The complete explanation of Ferrari’s approach to Sunday’s race is available in GRANDE PRÊMIO.
What is at stake in the Singapore Grand Prix?
Kimi Antonelli enters Sunday’s race with a commanding advantage in the Drivers’ Championship after finishing fourth in Saturday’s sprint.
The Mercedes driver has 325 points, 89 ahead of teammate George Russell, who failed to score after crashing out while leading.
Antonelli starts fourth, while Russell faces a recovery race from the back of the grid.
Ferrari also has an opportunity to reduce Mercedes’ lead in the Constructors’ Championship, with Leclerc and Hamilton starting ahead of Antonelli.
Red Bull, meanwhile, has closed to within 11 points of McLaren after Verstappen’s sprint victory and the final-lap collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The two McLaren drivers start fifth and sixth, looking to recover after Saturday’s incident.
