George Russell shed significant pressure ahead of the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season after Mercedes identified the root cause behind his recent performance struggles. The British driver learned that loss of top speed on straightaways was not connected to his driving technique, but to a specific issue within the car’s power unit.

Russell faced severe straight-line speed handicaps at both the British and Belgian Grands Prix. Initial technical feedback suggested the performance deficit was tied to how he deployed and managed power behind the wheel. In response, Russell spent several sessions altering his driving style to extract more performance from the engine package. However, ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Mercedes engineers discovered that mechanical and software factors within the power unit were the true culprit.

Speaking to media, Russell expressed relief at having clarity over the issue, while noting that his efforts to adapt his style were ultimately unnecessary.

“I am relieved,” Russell admitted. “When I was driving at Silverstone in free practice and Spa in qualifying, I was thinking about how I needed to drive to make the power unit work on the straights. The data indicated to us that this was likely the reason [I was struggling], but it turned out not to be the actual cause.”

The diagnostic error led Russell down a misleading development path during key sessions across race weekends.

“All that effort over three sessions trying to adjust my driving around a new technique turned out to be in vain. Focusing on the simple things is when I perform best; but we aren’t in a simple sport, so saying ‘let’s just focus on the basics’ is sometimes easier said than done,” Russell explained.

Russell looks to bounce back as Mercedes continues its battle near the top of the standings. The paddock news cycle remains active ahead of the weekend, following Carlos Sainz’s multi-year contract renewal with Williams and Isack Hadjar’s withdrawal from the Dutch GP due to injury.
