News Summary

Pedro Acosta has backed Marc Márquez to win the 2026 MotoGP World Championship, arguing that the Ducati rider has built too much momentum in the title fight after recovering a significant number of points.

Speaking ahead of the San Marino GP at Misano, Acosta was asked about Márquez’s physical condition and the championship battle. The KTM rider immediately pointed to the Spaniard’s recent run and the strength of the remaining calendar for the six-time MotoGP champion.

“The problem is that he has already recovered so many points that Marc comes with a lot of momentum. There are circuits coming that are very good for him. Apart from Indonesia, I don’t think there is any coming up where he hasn’t won,” Acosta said, in remarks reported by Motosan.

Márquez arrives at Misano after a crucial victory at Aragón, where he beat Acosta and Marco Bezzecchi to strengthen his championship challenge. The result continued a strong run for the Ducati rider after he had struggled for points at the British GP.

Acosta highlights Márquez’s record at remaining circuits

Acosta went through the circuits still scheduled for the final part of the season and identified only a small number where Márquez could face a disadvantage.

“Japan is coming, where he won the World Championship last year; then Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, Portimão and Valencia,” the KTM rider explained.

“Of all those remaining, I’ve told you two that could go badly for him: Portimão, where I don’t think he has ever finished, and Indonesia. Qatar doesn’t suit him too much either, and perhaps they will remove it.”

The reference to Indonesia and Qatar reflects Acosta’s assessment of where Márquez could be less comfortable. The key point, however, was that even potentially difficult weekends may not be enough to prevent Márquez from continuing to collect valuable championship points.

“Even if they don’t remove it, the guy comes with a very big momentum. He has recovered a hundred-plus points and, on bad days, he finishes seventh. He’s picking up points from everywhere,” Acosta said.

“When Marc has to push, he will push”

Acosta also believes Márquez’s experience could become decisive as the championship enters its final phase.

“When Marc has to push, he will push, just as he did when he took a risk at the first corner in Aragón,” Acosta said.

“I see it being tight until the very end, but he is also the one with the most experience. He should win this championship.”

Márquez’s victory at Aragón came after a weekend in which he won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix, taking maximum points from the round and significantly reducing the gap to championship leader Jorge Martín.

The official MotoGP classification shows Márquez winning the Aragón GP ahead of Acosta, with Bezzecchi third.

The result was particularly important after Márquez had endured a difficult weekend at Silverstone, where his title challenge appeared to lose momentum. His recovery at Aragón instead restored him as one of the leading candidates for the championship.

Acosta is focused on his own progress

Despite backing Márquez for the championship, Acosta insisted that he is not planning to become directly involved in the title fight.

The KTM rider said his priority is to win a race himself while continuing to improve the bike during the final part of his KTM career.

“I’ll try to win a race. I’m not thinking about that right now. We’re trying to improve the bike and make sure we don’t have mechanical problems, but we’re lacking a little performance, that’s clear,” Acosta said.

“So I’ll try to be as close to the podium as possible and gain experience for next year. In the end, even though I want to achieve very good results this year, mine will be preparation for when the time comes.”

Acosta will move to Ducati for 2027, where he will become Márquez’s teammate. The pairing will create one of the most closely watched garages in MotoGP, with Acosta already describing Márquez as the benchmark he will have to learn from when the new partnership begins. Pedro has already explained why he sees his move to Ducati alongside Márquez as a major new challenge.

For now, however, the KTM rider sees Márquez as the man best positioned to take control of the 2026 championship.

The San Marino GP at Misano is the next opportunity for Márquez to close the gap to Martín, with the championship fight entering its decisive European phase before the final run through Asia and the Iberian Peninsula.

GRANDE PRÊMIO will follow all the action from Misano and the remaining rounds of the 2026 MotoGP season.
