Pedro Acosta finally became a MotoGP race winner on Sunday, producing a commanding ride at the Red Bull Ring to defeat Jorge Martín and deliver KTM victory at its home Grand Prix.
Less than 24 hours after crashing out of the Austrian Sprint lead, Acosta responded by passing both Marco Bezzecchi and Martín during the opening nine laps before controlling the remainder of the 28-lap contest.
The victory ended a sequence of 15 MotoGP podium appearances without a Grand Prix win for the 22-year-old. It also justified the belief that Austria represented Acosta’s best remaining opportunity to win with KTM before his departure at the end of 2026.
Martín held pole position into the opening corner, but the strongest start belonged to Aprilia. Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura passed Marc Márquez, while Acosta also cleared the Ducati rider before the end of the first lap.
Bezzecchi briefly took the lead at Turn 1 on the second lap, only for Martín to respond immediately. Acosta, meanwhile, overtook Ogura for third and quickly closed on the factory Aprilias.
The KTM rider passed Bezzecchi at the Turn 2 chicane on lap four, bringing himself onto Martín’s rear wheel. Martín resisted until lap nine, when Acosta attacked around the outside of Turn 1 and completed the move on the exit.
Once in front, Acosta gradually created a gap. Martín remained within striking distance during the middle portion of the race, but the KTM rider managed his medium Michelin tyres and avoided a repeat of Saturday’s costly loss of concentration.
Acosta eventually crossed the line first to secure a landmark victory in front of approximately 46,000 spectators at KTM’s home circuit.
Martín strengthens championship lead as Márquez struggles
Martín finished second, with team-mate Bezzecchi completing the podium for Aprilia. Ogura marked his return from a hand injury with an impressive fourth place for Trackhouse.
Márquez endured a difficult afternoon. After dropping from second to fifth at the start, the defending champion made a mistake at Turn 1 on lap ten and briefly fell as low as seventh.
The Ducati rider recovered to fifth, but Martín’s runner-up finish increased the Aprilia rider’s championship advantage from three to 12 points.
Álex Márquez was the race’s only retirement after losing control of his Gresini Ducati at the entrance to the Turn 2 chicane on lap 13.
Diogo Moreira, meanwhile, started 16th and climbed to 15th aboard the LCR Honda, earning one championship point.
