News Summary

Marc Márquez cannot become MotoGP world champion on Saturday, November 7. A win in the Qatar sprint would take him to 411 points, but even if Jorge Martín scores nothing, the Ducati rider would leave Lusail on Saturday night with a lead of 56 points. There would still be 99 available.

Saturday can, however, change what Márquez needs to do on Sunday. A sprint win would give him enough room to clinch an eighth premier-class title from second place in the Grand Prix, depending on what Martín and Marco Bezzecchi score.

Why Saturday is too early for Márquez to clinch

Márquez starts the weekend on 399 points, with Martín on 355 and Bezzecchi on 332. The sprint pays a maximum of 12 points. Sunday’s Grand Prix offers another 25, and the final rounds in Portugal and Valencia offer 37 apiece.

Even if both Aprilia riders fail to score on Saturday, a sprint win would put Márquez 56 points clear of Martín and 79 ahead of Bezzecchi. Both gaps would still be within the 99 points available from Sunday onwards.

What a sprint win would mean for Sunday

After Sunday’s race, the number of points still available falls from 99 to 74. To clinch in Qatar, Márquez needs to outscore Martín by at least 30 points across the sprint and Grand Prix. A 74-point lead is enough against Martín because Márquez already has the advantage on Grand Prix wins.

The target against Bezzecchi depends on who wins on Sunday. A Grand Prix victory for Márquez means he needs to gain 7 points on Bezzecchi across the weekend. If Márquez finishes anywhere else, he needs to gain 8 to put Bezzecchi out of reach.

Both rivals must finish the weekend at or below the points limits shown in the same row. That makes 3 sprint points for Martín a useful number to watch. If Martín scores at least that many on Saturday, Márquez cannot clinch by winning the sprint and finishing second on Sunday, even if Martín scores nothing in the Grand Prix.

Martín’s target is 8 points across the weekend

Martín can guarantee the title fight reaches Portugal by scoring 8 points in Qatar. Fourth in the sprint would give him 6, leaving him needing just 2 on Sunday. Eighth in the Grand Prix would deliver all 8 on its own.

The Aprilia rider secured direct entry to Q2 on his return from a fractured right wrist. He was seventh in Friday evening Practice, with Márquez second behind Fabio Di Giannantonio and Bezzecchi third.

The 11-lap Qatar sprint starts at 19:00 local time, 16:00 GMT, 11:00 EST and 21:30 IST on Saturday. Sunday’s Grand Prix starts at the same local time.
