Riders begin Moto2 Practice at Silverstone (Video: MotoGP)

Daniel Holgado set a new track record to secure top spot in Moto2 Practice for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Aspar Kalex rider led the way this Friday (7) with a time of 2m01.815s, edging Senna Agius by just 0.095s as the pair displayed pace well clear of the competition.

Manuel González, Alex Escrig, Izan Guevara, Barry Baltus, Daniel Muñoz, Mario Aji, Celestino Vietti, Iván Ortolá, Alonso López, Sergio García, Filip Salač, and Collin Veijer secured the remaining direct entry spots into Saturday’s (8) Q2 shootout.

The biggest disappointment of the session belonged to David Alonso, who could manage only the 22nd-fastest time and will have to navigate Q1 to secure a favorable grid slot for Sunday’s race.

Moto2 returns to the track this Saturday (8) at 6:25 AM BRT for FP2 at the British Grand Prix. GRANDE PRÊMIO will cover all the action throughout the weekend across every World Championship class.

How Moto2 Practice unfolded at Silverstone:

With track temperatures reaching 23°C amidst warm weather at Silverstone, 26 riders headed out for the decisive session in pursuit of the 14 direct Q2 spots. Expectations pointed toward a higher pace than Moto3, which was confirmed in the opening minutes.

Mario Aji brought an early surprise by taking top spot with a 2m02.590s, but Daniel Muñoz responded shortly after. Soon after, Daniel Holgado posted a 2m02.386s to take command of the timesheet.

Margins remained exceptionally tight from the outset, with 16 riders separated by just 0.8s. Senna Agius, Iván Ortolá, Izan Guevara, Manuel González, Filip Salač, Alonso López, and Collin Veijer filled out the provisional top 10.

Barry Baltus stood out as a primary struggle. After placing among the fastest in FP1, the Belgian opened FP2 with a modest 2m03.150s, holding a provisional 15th place outside the Q2 promotion zone.

With 25 minutes remaining, Celestino Vietti, David Alonso, and Taiyo Furusato also found themselves stranded outside the top 14, unable to match the benchmark set by Holgado.

Battles remained fierce through the mid-session phase, though the sharp end of the order saw few changes. Sergio García occupied 14th with a 2m03.111s, followed closely by Vietti, Alonso, Arón Canet, Ayumu Sasaki, and Alberto Fernández.

With 12 minutes on the clock, Iván Ortolá—already comfortably inside the Q2 cut—suffered a slide at Turn 15, though the incident did not jeopardize his provisional place in the top 14.

In the final ten minutes, Alonso López appeared to seal his progression by posting a 2m02.701s—an impressive effort considering the Spaniard is competing while recovering from two fractures in his right hand. However, track evolution placed him under pressure in the closing minutes.

The main highlight of the session turned into a direct duel for the all-time Silverstone lap record. Senna Agius temporarily went top with a 2m01.910s, but Holgado responded instantly with a 2m01.815s to claim top spot and establish the new circuit benchmark.

Surprise direct entries into Q2 included Sergio García and Mario Aji. Conversely, David Alonso endured a frustrating session: his final flyer was deleted, leaving him 22nd overall with a 2m03.136s, far removed from automatic progression.
