News Summary
- Marc Márquez has recovered a 102-point deficit in seven rounds to reach the top of the MotoGP standings
- Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali highlighted Márquez’s strength and concentration throughout the comeback
- Márquez and Jorge Martín are tied on 274 points with eight rounds remaining
Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali has praised Marc Márquez’s mental strength after the Spaniard completed a remarkable 102-point recovery to take the lead of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship.
Márquez completed a perfect San Marino GP weekend at Misano, winning both the Sprint and Grand Prix to draw level with Aprilia’s Jorge Martín on 274 points. The Ducati rider officially leads the standings because he has five Grand Prix victories this season compared with Martín’s one.
Only seven rounds earlier, that position appeared distant. Márquez left Mugello eighth in the championship and 102 points behind then-leader Marco Bezzecchi after his early-season injury disrupted his title defence.
Asked how Márquez had managed to eliminate such a deficit so quickly, Domenicali pointed to the mental demands of maintaining a comeback over several race weekends.
“You have to be very strong and very focused to make a comeback like that,” Domenicali told AS. “Marc has ridden very well in all these races.”
The Ducati CEO also acknowledged that circumstances elsewhere in the title fight helped Márquez recover the deficit, with both Martín and Bezzecchi dropping significant points during the seven-round run.
“He has also had a little luck because our rivals have made mistakes,” Domenicali said. “Now we all start from zero, tied on points.”

Márquez turns 102-point deficit into MotoGP lead
Márquez’s comeback began after a difficult return from the foot injury he sustained at Le Mans. He missed the Catalan GP and could manage only seventh on his return at Mugello, leaving him 102 points away from the championship lead.
His season changed dramatically from there. Márquez returned to winning form at Balaton Park before adding victories at Brno, Sachsenring, Aragón and Misano, scoring 102 points across the last seven rounds.
MotoGP has confirmed that no rider has previously recovered a deficit that large to reach the championship lead. Francesco Bagnaia’s recovery from 91 points behind Fabio Quartararo on his way to the 2022 title remains the largest deficit overturned by an eventual MotoGP world champion.
Whether Márquez can complete the second half of that record remains unresolved. Eight rounds are still to be contested, and Martín arrives at the Austrian GP level on points despite losing the championship lead on countback.
Bezzecchi also remains firmly involved. The Aprilia rider is 33 points behind the leading pair after crashing while leading on the opening lap at Misano.
Ducati refuses to treat comeback as job done
Domenicali’s assessment follows a similarly cautious message from Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi, who said after Misano that Márquez had demonstrated his experience but stressed that the championship remains open.
That caution is understandable after the volatility of the first 14 rounds. Márquez himself went from apparently being out of contention to leading the championship in seven events, while Martín and Bezzecchi have both occupied the top of the standings during the season.
For Ducati, however, Márquez’s recovery has changed the complexion of a championship that appeared to be moving towards Aprilia earlier in the year. The defending champion heads to Spielberg with the points deficit completely erased and control of his title challenge back in his own hands.
The numbers may have returned to zero between Márquez and Martín, but the route there has been anything but even.
