Izan Guevara set the benchmark in Moto2 qualifying at Silverstone to secure pole position for the British Grand Prix after dominating the deciding session. The Spaniard riding for Pramac Yamaha bested Alonso López with a blistering 2m01.483s flyer.

Iván Ortolá completed the front row of the grid in third position. Championship leader Manuel González anchors the second row ahead of Daniel Muñoz and Filip Salac.

Daniel Holgado, Alex Escrig, Joe Roberts, and Ayumu Sasaki rounded out the top ten positions on the grid. The biggest disappointment of the session belonged to David Alonso, who failed to advance to Q2 for the first time this season and will start deep in the midfield pack.

Moto2 action resumes at Silverstone on Sunday (9) for the British Grand Prix, round 12 of the 2026 season. GRANDE PRÊMIO will cover all the action throughout the weekend alongside the support categories in the World Championship.

How Moto2 qualifying unfolded at Silverstone:

Q1 — Roberts surprises while David Alonso suffers novel elimination

Under cloudy skies with ambient temperatures at 27°C at Silverstone, Q1 for Moto2 began with heightened anticipation due to the presence of big names such as Tony Arbolino, David Alonso, José Antonio Rueda, and Taiyo Furusato. The Japanese rider entered off the back of a fifth-place finish at the German GP, but struggled to adapt to the British circuit.

Early in the session, Furusato crashed at Turn 14 and failed to set a timed lap, compounding a difficult weekend for the rider at Silverstone. Overall, Q1 delivered tighter competition than Moto3 despite track conditions.

Aarón Canet also endured a frustrating qualifying session. The Spaniard fell at Turn 4 with just 1 minute remaining on the clock and, unable to improve his previous benchmark, was eliminated from Q2 contention.

Pace accelerated in the closing minutes, with Joe Roberts delivering a late surprise to go top with a 2m02.187s. Tony Arbolino, Ayumu Sasaki, and Zonta van den Goorbergh secured the remaining four transfer spots.

However, the main headline disappointment was David Alonso. The Colombian posted a 2m03.100s to finish fifth in the session, missing out on Q2. This marked the first time in 12 rounds this season that Alonso failed to reach the secondary qualifying phase.

Another driver falling short of expectations was Alberto Fernández. The rider aboard the #54 entry set a 2m02.955s on his second flying lap, but couldn’t find enough pace to advance.

Q2 — Guevara holds off López to secure pole following red flag

Q2 opened at a relatively modest pace, with only eight riders within a second of the provisional leader. Izan Guevara established an early benchmark of 2m01.483s to go top, followed by Iván Ortolá, Alonso López, Manuel González, and Daniel Muñoz.

Just as lap times began to drop, the session was brought to a halt by a red flag. With 8 minutes remaining, Filip Salač, Mario Aji, and Zonta van den Goorbergh were involved in an incident at Turn 11.

Salač triggered the crash following a risky maneuver and was placed under investigation for a potential penalty. All three riders were taken to the medical center conscious and without initial indications of severe injuries.

The stoppage lasted approximately 10 minutes. Upon resumption, several riders headed out on track with around 5 minutes remaining, while Guevara opted to stay in the garage initially.

The strategy paid off. The drivers returning to the track failed to close in on the Spaniard’s benchmark time, while lap times for Alex Escrig and Daniel Holgado were deleted.

Guevara remained in the garage until the final moments as his rivals launched their final attempts. As the clock hit zero, Alonso López posed the biggest threat to the lead, but posted a 2m01.809s to end up second.

With that, Guevara confirmed pole position at Silverstone. Iván Ortolá rounded out the front row, maintaining his strong form from earlier in the weekend at Silverstone.
