Agius will step up from Moto2 to partner Luca Marini at Tech3, becoming the fifth rookie in a class that will simultaneously undergo one of the biggest technical resets in its history. The Australian joins Nicolò Bulega, Dani Holgado, David Alonso and Izan Guevara among the newcomers.

The scale of the rider-market overhaul is considerable. Only five riders are certain to remain with the same teams they currently represent: Marc Márquez at Ducati, Marco Bezzecchi at Aprilia, Raúl Fernández at Trackhouse, Johann Zarco at LCR and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu at Pramac. That number could become six depending on Honda’s final decision over Moreira.

Honda provides the only remaining piece of uncertainty — but it is an allocation question rather than an open seat. Fabio Quartararo will lead the factory operation and Zarco remains at LCR, while HRC has secured both Moreira and Alonso. It has yet to decide which youngster will join Quartararo and which will occupy the second LCR bike.

Every rider on the grid therefore has a MotoGP destination for 2027.

The line-up represents the culmination of an unusually aggressive rider market driven partly by MotoGP’s move to its new technical regulations in 2027.

At Ducati, Marc Márquez remains the centrepiece of the factory project but gains one of the paddock’s biggest names as his new team-mate. Pedro Acosta leaves KTM to join the Italian manufacturer, while Francesco Bagnaia moves in the opposite direction within the wider competitive picture by leaving Ducati for Aprilia.

Bagnaia will partner Marco Bezzecchi, giving Aprilia an all-Italian factory pairing. KTM, meanwhile, has an entirely new line-up of Álex Márquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio.

Honda has also made one of the market’s headline moves by recruiting Fabio Quartararo from Yamaha. The 2021 world champion will lead HRC’s factory project, with either Moreira or Alonso alongside him.

Yamaha replaces Quartararo with another MotoGP world champion, Jorge Martín. The Spaniard will partner Ai Ogura, who moves across from Trackhouse.

The changes are just as extensive among the satellite operations. Gresini has signed Joan Mir and rookie Dani Holgado, while VR46 will field Fermín Aldeguer alongside Nicolò Bulega. Bulega’s move is particularly unusual: the Italian returns to the Grand Prix paddock from WorldSBK and will make his MotoGP debut in 2027. Trackhouse retains Raúl Fernández but adds Enea Bastianini, while Tech3 has opted for a completely new combination of Marini and Agius. Agius was confirmed on Wednesday as the final rider to join the 2027 grid, giving Australia continued representation in the premier class.

Pramac also has a substantially different pairing. Toprak Razgatlıoğlu stays with the Yamaha satellite operation and will be joined by Izan Guevara, whose promotion to MotoGP was confirmed in August.

Five rookies arrive — and five established names disappear

The reshuffle has created an unusually large rookie class.

Bulega arrives from WorldSBK, while Holgado, Alonso, Guevara and Agius step up from Moto2. MotoGP officially describes Agius as the fifth rookie confirmed for 2027.

Their arrival comes at the expense of several familiar names. Franco Morbidelli, Maverick Viñales, Álex Rins, Jack Miller and Brad Binder are all set to leave the full-time MotoGP grid after 2026. Between them, the group includes multiple premier-class race winners and extensive factory experience.

The upheaval coincides with the introduction of the 850cc regulations and Pirelli becoming MotoGP’s tyre supplier. That combination means teams are not simply preparing different rider line-ups: they will enter 2027 with fundamentally different machinery and tyres as well.

For Agius, that reset offers an unusual entry point. Rather than adapting to a mature generation of MotoGP bikes, the 21-year-old will begin alongside the rest of the field as teams learn an entirely new technical package.

Tech3 CEO Günther Steiner said the team deliberately sought a combination of experience and youth for that transition, with Marini providing the former and Agius the latter.

The contracts are now in place. The final question is where Honda puts its two young riders: Moreira alongside Quartararo and Alonso at LCR, or Alonso at the factory team with Moreira remaining alongside Zarco.

Either way, there are no seats left to fill.
