Yamaha Team Director Massimo Meregalli expressed excitement about the arrival of a new era in MotoGP for the 2027 season. The executive stated he is thankful for the work accomplished with Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins, but highlighted that the sweeping changes coming to the premier class will bring “fresh air.”

The Iwata-based factory is navigating a challenging period in MotoGP, remaining winless for over four years since Quartararo claimed victory at the 2022 German GP. In an effort to climb out of the slump, the Japanese squad abandoned its longstanding inline-four engine tradition to align with rivals by adopting a V4 powertrain; however, the transition has yet to yield a major performance leap.

With its bike still in the early stages of development, the three-tuning-forks brand sits at the bottom of the Constructors’ World Championship standings, trailing leader Aprilia by 261 points.

Against this backdrop, 2027 represents a critical window of opportunity. Beyond the technical overhaul—which will feature 850cc engines and reduced aerodynamics—Yamaha will also field a brand-new rider lineup consisting of Jorge Martín and Ai Ogura.

“Next year will be a fresh start, and having two new drivers as well definitely gets us excited,” Meregalli told the official MotoGP website. “Even the best things come to an end, and we are closing a long chapter with Fabio and Álex,” he continued.

“We are certainly grateful for everything they’ve done for us and for the way we’ve worked together. But with new riders and a new set of regulations—so many new elements—it will undoubtedly bring fresh air and renewed motivation,” he predicted. “We are excited to kick off a completely new season because there are so many positive developments ahead for everyone,” he concluded.

MotoGP is currently on its summer break and will return to action from August 7 to 9 with the British Grand Prix, the 12th round of the 2026 season.
