Nico Hülkenberg narrowly escaped what could have been a major intra-team disaster on the opening lap of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, taking swift action to avoid T-boning his Audi teammate Gabriel Bortoleto.
The drama unfolded through the tight mid-pack sequence shortly after the lights went out at Circuit Zandvoort. Bortoleto, starting 9th, lost traction amidst the dense field and snapped into a broadside spin across the track.
Hülkenberg, who started 13th, was rapidly approaching the corner directly behind his teammate. Blinded by the surrounding cars ahead, the German driver reacted instantly as Bortoleto’s Audi came into view perpendicular to the racing line. Hülkenberg veered sharply onto the apron, missing Bortoleto’s sidepod by centimeters.
Thanks to Hülkenberg’s evasive action and Bortoleto’s prompt recovery spin, both Audi drivers emerged from the opening-lap chaos without contact. Bortoleto rejoined at the back of the running order before the race was red-flagged for Max Verstappen’s separate crash.
