Bell now has 2,123 points, just 12 behind team-mate and championship leader Denny Hamlin, who has 2,135.

The result is an especially important boost for Bell after he entered the Chase without a victory in the 2026 season. He had also finished runner-up seven times during the year before finally returning to Victory Lane at one of NASCAR’s most demanding tracks.

Bell’s victory also follows a dramatic regular-season finale in which Ryan Preece secured the final spot in the 16-driver Chase field. GRANDE PRÊMIO previously detailed how the new 2026 championship format reset the contenders’ points before the 10-race title-deciding stretch. NASCAR 2026 Chase field and points reset

Bell wins the strategy battle against Larson

For much of the Southern 500, victory appeared to be heading toward Kyle Larson.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver led a race-high 99 of the 367 laps and controlled the race through much of the final stages. But a rain stoppage with 29 laps remaining changed the complexion of the finish.

Larson was among the drivers who stayed on track rather than taking fresh tires, while Bell was called into pit lane by Joe Gibbs Racing. Bell restarted fifth, but the fresh tires immediately transformed the No. 20 Toyota’s pace.

Two laps after the restart, Bell was already on Larson’s rear bumper. He then continued to close in before making the decisive move with 12 laps remaining.

NASCAR’s official report confirmed that Bell’s crew was the first among the cars that pitted during the final caution, giving him the best possible track position among the fresh-tire runners.

Larson’s decision was not without logic. His crew chief Cliff Daniels said the team believed staying in front offered a better chance of victory than restarting behind the faster Toyotas.

Christopher Bell finally added his first 2026 NASCAR win sticker after ending his winless streak at Darlington (Photo: NASCAR)

Larson ultimately held on for fifth, while Bell moved to the front and began managing the pressure from the other Chase contenders.

Bell holds off Ty Gibbs and Reddick

Once he passed Larson, Bell still had plenty of work to do.

Ty Gibbs finished second, 1.038 seconds behind his Joe Gibbs Racing team-mate, while Tyler Reddick completed the podium for 23XI Racing. Ryan Blaney finished fourth and Larson took fifth.

Bell’s victory came despite leading only 46 laps, highlighting how decisive the final restart and tire strategy proved to be. The No. 20 Toyota also secured its first victory of the season at the most important possible moment.

The full top 10 at Darlington was completed by Chase Briscoe, Josh Berry, Bubba Wallace, Joey Logano and Ryan Preece. Josh Berry was the only driver among those positions who was not competing in the Chase.

The result also means that all four full-time Joe Gibbs Racing drivers have now won races since 2019, after Bell joined Hamlin, Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe in Victory Lane during the current era.

Bell becomes Hamlin’s closest challenger

The points reset before Darlington brought the 16 Chase contenders closer together, making the opening race particularly important.

Bell began the Chase sixth, but his victory vaulted him into second behind Hamlin. Blaney is third, followed by Reddick and Briscoe.

Bubba Wallace was another major beneficiary of the opening race, climbing from 14th to 10th. William Byron, meanwhile, fell three positions and is now 16th, at the bottom of the championship field after an engine failure forced him into the garage 48 laps from the finish.

With nine races still to go, Bell has immediately transformed his championship position. The next round will take the NASCAR Cup Series to World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in Illinois for the Enjoy Illinois 300.

The race is scheduled for Sunday (13), marking the second round of the 10-race Chase. GRANDE PRÊMIO previously mapped out the full Chase route, which includes Gateway, Bristol, Kansas, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Phoenix, Talladega, Martinsville and Homestead-Miami. The 2026 NASCAR Chase schedule and format

FAQ

How does the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase work?

The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series uses a 10-race Chase among the 16 drivers who qualified from the 26-race regular season. Points were reset before Darlington, with bonuses based on each driver’s position in the regular-season standings. The driver with the most points after the 10 Chase races wins the championship.

Who leads the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship after Darlington?

Denny Hamlin leads the Chase with 2,135 points, while Christopher Bell is second with 2,123. Bell is therefore only 12 points behind his Joe Gibbs Racing team-mate after winning the opening race.

When is the next NASCAR Cup Series race?

The next NASCAR Cup Series race is the Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in Illinois on Sunday, September 13.
