M\u00e1rquez attacked at the following chicane, where neither rider appeared willing to surrender the corner. The Ducati emerged ahead, while Mart\u00edn lost momentum and dropped through the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no investigation and no penalty. There was also no prolonged complaint from Mart\u00edn. Instead, he responded through his riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aprilia rider passed Brad Binder, Francesco Bagnaia, Ai Ogura and Alex M\u00e1rquez during the opening phase. He then attacked Bezzecchi at Turn 1 before using the same corner one lap later to recover second place from Marc M\u00e1rquez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move carried the same firmness M\u00e1rquez had demonstrated on the opening lap, but remained clean. It also showed that Mart\u00edn was no longer interested only in protecting points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After finishing fifth at Arag\u00f3n, Mart\u00edn explained that he had been placing points \u201cin the bank\u201d while waiting for an opportunity to become more aggressive. Austria provided that opening, and he used it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time Mart\u00edn reached second, Acosta was almost three seconds ahead. Catching the KTM through pace alone appeared unlikely, but Mart\u00edn had already transformed a potentially damaging Sprint into a result that would at least keep him immediately behind his title rival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Acosta made the mistake that changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acosta dominates\u2014and then loses concentration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acosta had been the fastest rider throughout the Austrian weekend. He led both Friday sessions, qualified third and passed M\u00e1rquez on the opening lap before immediately building a decisive advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The KTM rider was not merely defending track position. Acosta became distracted while checking warnings on his dashboard, missed his braking reference and lost the front while entering the chicane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The error was small in its origin and enormous in its consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTotally my mistake, so let\u2019s try not to overthink it, move on to tomorrow and try to be as fast as we were today, because I think this was by far our strongest race,\u201d Acosta said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was looking at the dashboard warnings, lost my concentration a bit, missed the braking point and then went wide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crash denied KTM a victory at its home circuit and prevented Acosta from converting his most complete Sprint performance of 2026 into a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also placed Mart\u00edn in the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mart\u00edn delivers maximum punishment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mart\u00edn made no corresponding error. Mart\u00edn struck hard, but he did not escape.
