Its electrical motor would produce approximately 100kW, considerably below the 350kW available from the present Energy Recovery System.

Formula 1 would therefore retain hybrid technology and fully sustainable fuel while returning combustion power to the centre of the package.

The direction follows months of debate over the cost, weight and complexity of the current units. The FIA previously identified simpler technology, lower development spending, reduced weight, road relevance, sound and spectator appeal as its priorities for the next cycle.

Why F1 rejected a naturally aspirated V8

A naturally aspirated 3.0-litre V8 was evaluated and would have produced a louder, more traditional sound. That option, however, created an unexpected problem: noise restrictions.

Several street circuits—including Melbourne, Miami, Madrid, Singapore, Baku and Las Vegas—operate under limits that could make a substantially louder Formula 1 engine difficult to accommodate.

The fear was not merely that organisers would receive complaints. Exceeding local restrictions could threaten the future of some races.

Retaining a smaller turbocharger became the compromise. The proposed engine should still sound considerably louder than the current V6 hybrid without reaching the levels expected from the naturally aspirated alternative.

The outcome may disappoint supporters expecting an exact recreation of Formula 1’s previous V8 era. It nevertheless addresses the principal criticism directed at modern engines while protecting an increasingly city-based calendar.

Max Verstappen has repeatedly argued that the return of V8 engines could influence how long he remains in Formula 1, while Mercedes has compared the sound of the existing power unit to a fire alarm.

FIA targets 50kg reduction and simpler hybrid system

The FIA wants the complete power unit to weigh at least 50kg less than the current package. That objective is central to the wider attempt to produce smaller and more responsive Formula 1 cars.

Electrification will remain, but its role will change substantially. The proposed 100kW motor preserves a link with road-car technology without recreating the cost and energy-management demands of the present 350kW system.

Sustainable fuel is also considered non-negotiable. The FIA established during its earlier meetings with Audi, Ferrari, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes and Red Bull Powertrains that every future concept must retain some electrification and run on sustainable fuel.

That makes the next-generation engine a reset rather than a return to the past. The V8 configuration may be familiar, but the fuel, turbocharger and compact hybrid system will distinguish it from the engines used between 2006 and 2013.

The FIA has already begun shifting the current regulations towards greater combustion output. F1 will shorten races to approximately 290km from 2027 as fuel flow increases and electrical deployment is reduced.

Push-to-pass could replace previous DRS concept

The FIA and manufacturers are also evaluating a temporary power boost for overtaking.

The proposed system would operate more like IndyCar’s push-to-pass than the drag reduction system used by Formula 1 until 2025. Drivers could receive additional power for a limited period under conditions still to be defined.

No final agreement has been reached over its operation, allocation or activation restrictions.

The other unresolved question is timing. Introducing the V8 in 2030 would end the present engine cycle one year early and require sufficient manufacturer support. Waiting until 2031 would follow the original regulatory timetable.

Further technical meetings will now define the remaining details before the FIA prepares a complete regulatory proposal. The next Formula 1 engine cycle is expected to begin in either 2030 or 2031.

F1 today: FAQ

What time is the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix?

The race starts on Saturday at 12:00 UK, 07:00 ET and 15:00 local time in Baku. Qualifying begins on Friday at 13:00 UK and 08:00 ET.

Why is the Azerbaijan GP being held on Saturday?

The race was moved forward because Sunday, 27 September, is Azerbaijan’s Remembrance Day. The full weekend shifted, with practice on Thursday and qualifying on Friday.

Can Kimi Antonelli win the 2026 F1 championship in Baku?

No. Antonelli leads George Russell by 81 points, but cannot secure the title in Azerbaijan. Singapore is his earliest mathematical opportunity.

Is Formula 1 bringing back V8 engines?

Formula 1 is working towards a 3.0-litre turbocharged V8 with a simplified hybrid system, but the regulations have not yet received final approval.

The FIA and manufacturers have reached broad agreement over a lighter 3.0-litre V8 with reduced electrification, although the introduction date and overtaking system remain undecided

{"42wp_featured_image_caption":"F1 agrees outline for lighter turbo V8 engine with reduced hybrid power","42wp_featured_image_credits":"F1","42wp_featured_video":"","42wp_featured_image_hidden":false,"42wp_authors_list":[

5
599,509,57,508],"42wp_author":[75
post-2662","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-f1","tag-f1-2030","tag-f1-engines","tag-fia","tag-v8","42wp_author-pedro-henrique-marum
["GET
