Márquez has 331.

The timing could hardly be more intriguing because the next stop is Mandalika — the only circuit on the current calendar where Márquez has never reached the finish of a MotoGP Grand Prix.

The Ducati rider arrives in Indonesia with considerable momentum after closing dramatically on Martín at Motegi. But recent form now collides with a peculiar history: since MotoGP first visited Mandalika in 2022, virtually everything that could go wrong for Márquez on Grand Prix Sunday has gone wrong.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO detailed ahead of the Indonesian GP, Márquez has experienced a violent warm-up crash, another accident and a mechanical failure across his previous visits.

Now he returns with the championship lead only two points away.

Márquez has never finished a Sunday race at Mandalika

Mandalika’s place in Márquez’s career began with one of his most frightening crashes in recent years.

In 2022, the Spaniard suffered a huge highside during warm-up at Turn 7. Márquez was thrown into the air and landed heavily, with Honda withdrawing him from the Grand Prix after he was diagnosed with a concussion.

The consequences extended beyond Indonesia. On his journey home, Márquez began experiencing diplopia again — the double-vision problem that had previously threatened his career.

When MotoGP returned to Mandalika in 2023, Márquez was still riding for Honda. He crashed out of both the sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix, leaving Indonesia without completing either race.

His move to Gresini Ducati improved his competitiveness significantly in 2024, but not his Sunday record at Mandalika. Márquez recovered strongly from 12th on the grid and finished third in the sprint, only for his Ducati to suffer an engine failure during the Grand Prix.

Three Indonesian Grands Prix, three Sundays without a finish.

That makes Mandalika a statistical anomaly in a career that includes victories at virtually every type of circuit MotoGP has visited.

Marc Márquez at Mandalika in 2024 (Photo: MotoGP)

Martín has already proved he can win in Indonesia

Martín’s relationship with Mandalika is considerably more complicated than simply calling it a strong circuit — but unlike Márquez, he has already conquered it.

The Spaniard experienced his own costly Indonesian mistake during his 2023 championship fight with Francesco Bagnaia. Martín won the sprint to take the championship lead, then crashed out of Sunday’s Grand Prix while leading comfortably. That retirement allowed Bagnaia to retake control of the standings.

A year later, Martín returned and corrected the mistake. After another sprint crash, the then-Pramac Ducati rider responded by dominating Sunday’s 2024 Indonesian GP, controlling the race from the front to defeat Pedro Acosta and Bagnaia.

That victory became an important moment on his path to the 2024 MotoGP world championship.

The circumstances are different in 2026. Martín is now leading Aprilia’s title challenge rather than racing a Ducati, but Mandalika again arrives at a decisive moment. And Aprilia has reason for optimism.

The RS-GP has traditionally performed well on layouts requiring strong corner speed and stability, while Martín has repeatedly demonstrated that he understands how to be fast at Mandalika.

Jorge Martín (Photo: Michelin)

Motegi transformed the championship fight

The Indonesian GP would already have been important, but what happened at Motegi dramatically increased the stakes.

Márquez arrived in Japan needing to reduce Martín’s championship advantage and did considerably more than that. His performance across the weekend reduced the gap to just two points, effectively resetting the title fight before the final six rounds. That leaves virtually no margin for either rider.

A sprint victory is worth 12 points and a Grand Prix victory 25, meaning the championship lead can change hands several times during the Mandalika weekend alone.

For Márquez, Indonesia is therefore an opportunity to take control of the standings for the first time at a circuit where his Sunday record remains remarkably incomplete.

For Martín, it is a chance to halt Márquez’s momentum at a venue where he already knows how to win.

The contrast creates one of the most consequential weekends of the 2026 season.

Mandalika presents a different challenge from Motegi

The two circuits demand very different things from a MotoGP bike.

Motegi places a heavy emphasis on braking and acceleration, characteristics that traditionally suit Ducati particularly well. Mandalika is more flowing, combining fast direction changes with long-radius corners and sections where edge grip becomes especially important.

The Indonesian heat also places considerable stress on tyres and riders. That could alter the balance between Ducati and Aprilia.

Márquez has repeatedly demonstrated that the GP26 is the benchmark motorcycle in a wide range of conditions, but Martín and Aprilia have remained close enough throughout 2026 to turn the championship into a direct fight. Mandalika will provide another important comparison.

It also comes during an unusually eventful Indonesian weekend. Aleix Espargaró is returning to MotoGP with Honda to replace Joan Mir, making him the 32nd different rider to appear during the 2026 season.

That remarkable turnover has put the current campaign within four additional riders of setting a new MotoGP-era record. But the championship fight remains the main event.

Six rounds remain — and only two points separate them

Indonesia begins the final six-round stretch of the championship with 222 points still theoretically available across the remaining Grands Prix and sprints.

That means Mandalika will not decide the championship. It can, however, fundamentally change its direction.

Martín enters the weekend ahead, but his advantage is effectively negligible. Márquez arrives with momentum but faces a circuit where his Sunday history is worse than anywhere else on the calendar.

The next races will eventually take MotoGP through different types of tracks and conditions before the championship concludes in Valencia. Neither rider can rely on one particular circuit profile to carry him through the entire run-in.

For now, the equation is much simpler. Martín: 333. Márquez: 331. And next comes Mandalika.

GRANDE PRÊMIO provides full coverage of the MotoGP season and the Indonesian GP.

MotoGP today: FAQ

Who won the Japanese MotoGP race today?

Marc Márquez won the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, finishing 1.363s ahead of Jorge Martín.
