Six Grands Prix. And 222 points still available.

Jorge Martín’s 333-331 advantage over Marc Márquez means the 2026 MotoGP championship effectively begins again at Mandalika, but the six circuits remaining on the calendar present very different opportunities for the Aprilia and Ducati riders.

Indonesia is followed by Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, Portugal and Valencia. Between them are circuits where Márquez has produced some of the defining performances of his career, others he has never conquered and venues where Martín has already demonstrated championship-winning strength.

That makes the run-in particularly difficult to predict.

The bikes matter too. Ducati remains extremely competitive across a wide range of layouts, while Aprilia has demonstrated enough performance throughout 2026 to put Martín at the top of the championship and Marco Bezzecchi third. But history provides some clues.

Indonesia: Martín advantage

This is the clearest Martín opportunity of the six remaining rounds.

Mandalika is the only circuit on the current calendar where Márquez has never even finished a MotoGP Grand Prix. His three previous Sunday visits produced a DNS following a violent warm-up crash in 2022, another crash in 2023 and an engine failure with Gresini Ducati in 2024.

Martín’s record is not flawless either. He famously crashed while comfortably leading the 2023 Grand Prix, surrendering the championship advantage to Francesco Bagnaia. But he returned one year later and won.

That 2024 victory was an important step towards Martín’s first MotoGP world championship, and his riding style has worked well around Mandalika’s flowing layout. Aprilia also has reason to expect the RS-GP to perform strongly in Indonesia.

MotoGP itself described Mandalika as an Aprilia-favoured venue after Márquez reduced Martín’s championship advantage to two points at Motegi.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO detailed ahead of the Indonesian GP, the contrast is striking: Martín knows how to win at Mandalika, while Márquez is still trying simply to see the chequered flag on Sunday.

Edge: Martín

Jorge Martín (Photo: AFP)

Australia: Márquez advantage

If Indonesia gives Martín an immediate opportunity, Phillip Island provides Márquez with an equally enticing response two weeks later.

The Australian circuit has historically been one of Márquez’s strongest tracks. Its fast, flowing sequence of left-hand corners fits naturally with the Spaniard’s riding style, and he has repeatedly been formidable there.

Phillip Island also places a premium on commitment through fast corners and the ability to manage rear grip through long loaded sections — areas in which Márquez has traditionally excelled.

Martín is hardly weak in Australia. He has demonstrated considerable speed there and took pole position in 2022 and 2023, but Márquez’s historical affinity with Phillip Island makes this one of the rounds he is most likely to circle during the championship run-in.

There is also a strategic consequence to the calendar order. Any advantage Martín builds at Mandalika could immediately come under pressure in Australia.

Edge: Márquez

Malaysia: too close to call

Sepang is much harder to assign.

Márquez has won MotoGP races in Malaysia and historically performed strongly there, but the circuit does not provide the same obvious stylistic advantage as Phillip Island.

Martín also has competitive history at Sepang and, importantly, the Malaysian circuit demands a broad range of strengths rather than rewarding one particular riding characteristic.

Heavy braking into Turns 1 and 15 should suit the Ducati. But Sepang also demands strong corner speed, tyre management and stability through long-radius corners — characteristics that give Aprilia opportunities. Heat adds another variable.

Rear-tyre degradation can become decisive over the Grand Prix distance, making race setup and tyre choice potentially more important than either rider’s historical record.

Edge: Even

Qatar: Márquez has the stronger historical reference

Lusail’s return to the final stretch adds another fascinating variable.

Márquez has won there multiple times across his Grand Prix career and has generally been competitive under Qatar’s unusual night-race conditions.

The circuit combines long, loaded corners with a kilometre-long main straight and places substantial demands on rear grip. Ducati’s acceleration and braking stability should provide Márquez with a strong platform, although Aprilia has also produced excellent performances at Lusail in recent seasons.

Martín has enjoyed success in Qatar too, meaning this is not remotely comparable to the historical contrast at Mandalika.

But if the question is simply which of the championship contenders enters with the stronger body of evidence, Márquez has the advantage.

Edge: Márquez

Marc Márquez at Lusail (Photo: AFP)

Portugal: Martín opportunity

Portimão is the other remaining venue where Márquez’s historical numbers provide Martín with encouragement. Márquez has never won a MotoGP race at the Algarve International Circuit.

The Portuguese track’s dramatic elevation changes, blind crests and unusual braking zones make it one of the most distinctive challenges on the calendar. Márquez has shown speed there, but it has never developed into the kind of dominant relationship he has enjoyed with circuits such as Sachsenring, Aragón or Phillip Island.

Martín, meanwhile, has demonstrated that he can be highly competitive around Portimão, although his own record contains difficult weekends.

The more important consideration in 2026 could be Aprilia. The RS-GP’s corner speed and ability to carry momentum through long turns should translate well to several sections of Portimão. If Martín reaches Portugal still leading the championship, it could represent his best late-season opportunity to build a margin before Valencia.

Edge: Martín

Valencia: no clear favourite

And then comes Cheste.

If the championship reaches the final round undecided, history offers remarkably little comfort to either rider.

Márquez has won twice in MotoGP at Valencia and secured championships there, while the anti-clockwise layout contains numerous left-hand corners that traditionally suit him.

But Martín’s relationship with Valencia is arguably even more significant. It is where he became MotoGP world champion in 2024.

The Circuit Ricardo Tormo therefore carries very different but equally powerful memories for both contenders. Márquez has the stronger victory record, while Martín has already demonstrated that he can perform there with a championship at stake.

By that stage, however, historical statistics may matter considerably less than pressure, weather, tyre choice and the exact points situation.

Edge: Even

Where could the 2026 MotoGP title swing?

The remaining calendar therefore creates an intriguing pattern:

Grand Prix

Circuit

Historical/technical edge

Indonesia

Mandalika

Martín

Australia

Phillip Island

Márquez

Malaysia

Sepang

Even

Qatar

Lusail

Márquez

Portugal

Portimão

Martín

Valencia

Cheste

Even

This is not a prediction of who will win each race. A historical advantage does not automatically translate to the 2026 Ducati and Aprilia, and the championship has already demonstrated how quickly circumstances can change.

But the sequence explains why neither rider has an obvious calendar advantage.

Martín gets Mandalika immediately after Márquez reduced his championship lead to two points. Márquez then heads to Phillip Island, one of his strongest remaining circuits. Sepang could reset the balance before Lusail potentially offers the Ducati rider another opportunity.

Then comes Portimão, where Márquez has never won, followed by Valencia.

The calendar almost alternates between their stronger and weaker historical references.

Two points leave no room for a bad weekend

The mathematics make those circuit differences considerably more important.

A maximum 37 points are available at every remaining round — 12 from the sprint and 25 from Sunday’s Grand Prix. With six weekends left, 222 points remain on the table.

Márquez demonstrated at Motegi how quickly that can transform the championship. He completed a perfect weekend with sprint and Grand Prix victories, reducing Martín’s advantage to just two points.

That means one retirement can now matter far more than whether a circuit theoretically favours Ducati or Aprilia.

Martín experienced precisely that scenario at Mandalika in 2023 when he crashed from the lead. Márquez’s own Indonesian history provides an even more extreme illustration of how quickly a weekend can disappear.

For that reason, the strongest circuit may ultimately be less important than avoiding the weakest result.

Mandalika begins the final six-round fight

The first test arrives this weekend.

Martín starts Indonesia ahead, but 333-331 is effectively no cushion at all. Márquez can take the championship lead during Saturday’s sprint, while Martín has an immediate opportunity to stop the momentum his rival built in Japan.

The Indonesian GP also takes place at Márquez’s statistical nightmare track, while Martín returns to the circuit where he won in 2024.

After Mandalika, the character of the fight changes again. Phillip Island. Sepang. Lusail. Portimão. Valencia.

Two circuits appear to lean towards Martín. Two offer stronger historical references for Márquez. Two are too close to separate.

With only two championship points between them, MotoGP could hardly have designed a more balanced final stretch.

GRANDE PRÊMIO provides full coverage of the MotoGP championship throughout the final six rounds of 2026.

MotoGP today: FAQ

Who leads the 2026 MotoGP championship?

Jorge Martín leads the 2026 MotoGP World Championship with 333 points, just two ahead of Marc Márquez on 331.
