Yet Marc Márquez left Mandalika exactly 2 points behind the championship leader — the same deficit he had carried into the weekend.

That contradiction defines the latest chapter of an increasingly unpredictable season. Aprilia has established itself as a genuine benchmark rather than an occasional challenger to Ducati, but its superiority in Indonesia was not enough to give Martín a meaningful championship cushion.

Márquez’s victory in Saturday’s sprint was the decisive factor. While Marco Bezzecchi and Raúl Fernández collided at the opening corner and Martín subsequently encountered tyre-pressure difficulties, the Ducati rider capitalised on the opportunity to collect 12 points and temporarily take the championship lead.

Sunday provided a considerably less encouraging picture of Ducati’s competitiveness. Bezzecchi won ahead of Fernández, Martín and Ai Ogura, while Márquez finished sixth, 10.778 seconds behind the winner. Francesco Bagnaia retired, completing a difficult Grand Prix for the Bologna manufacturer.

But championship campaigns are not determined exclusively by the weekends when a rider has the fastest motorcycle. Márquez had arrived at a circuit where his previous MotoGP Grand Prix appearances had produced little success. Leaving Indonesia without losing further ground to Martín represented a substantial result in those circumstances.

Aprilia’s historic result exposes a wider change in MotoGP

The significance of Aprilia’s Indonesian performance extends beyond Bezzecchi’s fifth Grand Prix victory of 2026.

For the first time in its MotoGP history, Aprilia secured all four leading positions in a premier-class Grand Prix, with its factory riders and the independent Trackhouse team contributing equally to the achievement.

The result demonstrated the strength of the RS-GP26 across different riders and team structures. Fernández controlled the opening 18 laps despite competing with two fractured fingers, Bezzecchi completed the decisive overtake at Turn 1 on lap 19, and Ogura recovered to fourth after overtaking Pedro Acosta.

Martín, meanwhile, finished third despite difficulties with his front tyre. The championship leader did not need to win to benefit from the manufacturer’s competitiveness, although the final result also showed how much more valuable the weekend could have been without Saturday’s setbacks.

The scale of Aprilia’s progress is reflected in the championship tables. Aprilia now leads Ducati by 12 points in the Constructors’ Championship, 503 to 491, while the factory Aprilia Racing team holds a 145-point advantage over Ducati Lenovo in the Teams’ Championship.

Those numbers suggest that the battle between the manufacturers is no longer simply a matter of Ducati trying to contain one particularly fast Aprilia rider. The Noale manufacturer has developed a competitive package across its entire four-bike operation.

The situation is less straightforward for Ducati. Márquez remains a title contender despite the limitations exposed at Mandalika, but the manufacturer cannot rely indefinitely on its leading rider to compensate for weekends when its motorcycle struggles against the opposition.

Márquez’s greatest achievement in Indonesia was avoiding defeat

The Indonesian weekend illustrates why Márquez’s recovery has become one of the defining stories of the season.

After the Italian Grand Prix in May, the Spaniard was 102 points behind then-championship leader Bezzecchi. A series of victories and consistent results subsequently brought him back into contention, culminating in a dominant Japanese Grand Prix weekend at Motegi, where he won both the sprint and the main race.

That recovery placed Márquez within 2 points of Martín before Indonesia. On Saturday, he moved 4 points ahead by winning the sprint, only for Martín to reverse the positions with Sunday’s third place.

The latest MotoGP championship standings show Martín on 355 points and Márquez on 353, with Bezzecchi third on 309.

The championship lead has now changed hands eight times during 2026. Pedro Acosta, Bezzecchi, Martín and Márquez have all occupied first place at different stages, reflecting a season in which momentum has shifted repeatedly between riders and manufacturers.

Márquez’s performance at Mandalika was not an example of Ducati matching Aprilia on outright pace. It was an example of a championship contender extracting a useful overall result from a weekend when his principal rival possessed a more competitive motorcycle.

The distinction matters. Martín gained 6 points over Márquez in the Grand Prix, but the Ducati rider had gained 6 on Saturday. Across the two races, their points difference did not change.

Martín leads, but Bezzecchi remains part of the championship equation

Although Martín and Márquez are separated by only 2 points, the title picture is not exclusively a contest between the two Spaniards.

Bezzecchi’s victory lifted him to 309 points, 46 behind Martín, and reinforced his position as the third major contender. His pace in Indonesia also demonstrated the potential consequences of the mistakes that have prevented him from converting more of Aprilia’s competitiveness into championship points.

Saturday’s first-corner incident removed Bezzecchi and Fernández from a sprint in which both had been expected to challenge at the front. On Sunday, the Italian responded by patiently pursuing Fernández before taking the lead and building a winning margin of 4.260 seconds.

His championship position illustrates a different challenge from the one facing Márquez. Bezzecchi has demonstrated that he can win races with the Aprilia, but needs to reduce the points lost through incidents and inconsistent results if he is to close the gap to the leading pair.

Martín has the advantage of leading the standings and riding the motorcycle that dominated the latest Grand Prix. However, his weekend was not without difficulties, and the narrow margin over Márquez leaves little room for mistakes.

Behind the leading three, Ogura’s fourth place moved him to 259 points, just 1 ahead of Acosta. Their battle also reflects the changing competitive order, with Aprilia increasingly capable of placing several riders ahead of its main rivals.

Jorge Martín (Photo: AFP)

Ducati’s title hopes survive, but Aprilia has changed the competitive balance

The contrast between the two Italian manufacturers is particularly striking because Ducati has spent recent seasons establishing itself as MotoGP’s dominant force.

At Mandalika, however, its leading factory rider could manage only sixth, Bagnaia failed to finish and the independent Ducati teams were unable to challenge the Aprilia quartet. Álex Márquez was seventh, followed by Fabio Di Giannantonio in eighth.

Aprilia’s performance does not establish that the RS-GP26 will be the fastest motorcycle at every remaining circuit. Mandalika’s characteristics suited its package, and different tracks may alter the competitive order. Nevertheless, its growing strength in the manufacturers’ and teams’ standings provides evidence that its challenge extends beyond a single race result.

The championship now moves to Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix on October 23–25, with another demanding circuit awaiting the leading contenders.

For Martín, Australia represents an opportunity to turn Aprilia’s current momentum into a larger advantage. For Márquez, the immediate objective is to remain close enough to exploit the weekends when Ducati can fight for victory again. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, needs further results like his Indonesian win to reduce a deficit that remains significant.

The Indonesian Grand Prix ultimately delivered two very different outcomes: Aprilia strengthened its position as MotoGP’s leading manufacturer, while Márquez preserved his chances of defending the riders’ championship. Both developments will shape the final stages of the 2026 season.

GRANDE PRÊMIO continues its MotoGP coverage as the championship prepares for the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island on October 23–25.

Aprilia swept the top four at Mandalika, Jorge Martín reclaimed the championship lead and Ducati surrendered its constructors’ advantage.
