Márquez has collected 222, averaging 13.06.

The Aprilia rider has also finished in the points in 15 of the 17 grands prix, compared with 13 for Márquez.

That difference in consistency has been especially important during weekends when the Ducati rider failed to score.

Márquez collected no grand prix points in Thailand, Spain, France and Catalonia.

Martín failed to score in only two Sunday races: Catalonia and Hungary.

The contrast is particularly striking because Márquez has accumulated six victories, while Martín has only one.

Márquez has collected 150 points from his six grand prix wins alone, accounting for more than two-thirds of his Sunday total.

Martín’s nine podium finishes have provided a steadier stream of points, reducing the impact of his relatively small number of victories.

His strongest weekend came at Le Mans, where he won both the sprint and the grand prix to collect the maximum 37 points.

Jorge Martín (Photo: Michelin)

Sprint races have kept Márquez in the championship fight

If the championship were based exclusively on Sunday races, Martín would lead Márquez by 21 points.

However, the sprint format has substantially changed the balance.

Márquez has scored 131 sprint points, compared with Martín’s 112, gaining 19 points across the 17 weekends.

The Ducati rider has won eight sprints, twice as many as Martín.

Those victories have been especially valuable on weekends when Márquez struggled in the grand prix.

In Spain, for example, Márquez won the sprint but failed to score on Sunday. The 12 points collected on Saturday prevented the weekend from becoming a complete loss.

Indonesia provided another example.

Márquez won the sprint at Mandalika after Aprilia’s opening-lap problems, collecting 12 points while Martín finished fourth and scored six.

Although Martín recovered ground on Sunday, the sprint victory helped Márquez leave Indonesia just two points behind.

Without Saturday’s results, the championship standings would present a substantially different picture.

Márquez’s second-half recovery changed the championship

The season’s most significant transformation came after the Italian Grand Prix.

At Mugello, Martín had 156 points compared with Márquez’s 71 — an 85-point advantage.

The gap had developed during a difficult opening phase for the Ducati rider, who scored no points across the French and Catalan weekends.

However, Márquez responded with a sequence of dominant performances.

He won in Hungary, Czechia, Germany, Aragon, San Marino and Japan, accumulating six grand prix victories in the space of nine rounds.

The change was particularly dramatic in Hungary and Germany, where Márquez collected the maximum 37 points on both occasions.

His results transformed a substantial deficit into a direct championship challenge.

By the conclusion of the San Marino Grand Prix, Márquez had drawn level with Martín on 274 points.

The two riders subsequently exchanged advantages across Austria, Japan and Indonesia.

Martín’s consistency has protected Aprilia’s championship lead

Martín’s results have been less spectacular in terms of outright victories, but his consistency has prevented Márquez from building a lasting advantage.

The Aprilia rider has collected six second-place finishes in grands prix, in addition to his victory at Le Mans and two third-place results.

His performances in Brazil, the United States, Italy, Great Britain, Austria and Japan have been particularly valuable.

Each of those rounds produced 20 points from Sunday’s race, providing a reliable foundation for his championship campaign.

That regularity has also helped Martín withstand the growing competitiveness of other Aprilia riders.

At the Indonesian Grand Prix, Marco Bezzecchi led an unprecedented Aprilia sweep of the first four positions, but Martín finished only third.

The result allowed him to reclaim the championship lead by two points, rather than establish a more substantial advantage.

Aprilia is now considering possible team orders as the championship enters its final stages, adding another complication to the battle between its riders and Márquez.

Which rider has been more consistent in 2026?

The statistics point towards Martín when consistency is measured by regular Sunday points finishes, podium frequency and average grand prix scoring.

Martín has scored in 88.2% of the 17 grands prix, compared with 76.5% for Márquez.

He has also finished on the podium in 52.9% of the races, while Márquez’s podium rate stands at 35.3%.

However, Márquez has demonstrated a greater ability to convert competitive weekends into victories.

The Ducati rider has won 35.3% of the grands prix and 47.1% of the sprints.

Those contrasting strengths explain why the championship remains so close despite the significant difference in grand prix victories.

The numbers behind the final five rounds

With 185 points still available across the remaining five weekends, the championship remains open.

The Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island will be followed by Malaysia, Qatar, Portugal and Valencia.

Martín’s recent consistency gives Aprilia a strong foundation, while Márquez’s ability to score maximum points makes him a significant threat whenever Ducati has race-winning pace.

The mathematical scenarios for Márquez to regain the championship lead at Phillip Island show that he needs to outscore Martín by three points to move ahead outright.

The Australian circuit also presents a different technical challenge from Mandalika, as examined in GRANDE
