His appointment was announced on Thursday, October 15, shortly after Cadillac confirmed the departure of Lynn and Sébastien Bourdais from its factory WEC operation.

Lynn brings significant experience of top-level prototype racing, including pole position at the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans and a central role in Cadillac’s first overall WEC victory, achieved at the 6 Hours of São Paulo last year.

The move represents an important recruitment success for McLaren, which is developing the MCL-HY LMDh in preparation for its 2027 debut. Rather than relying exclusively on young drivers, the British manufacturer has assembled a group with substantial experience of the championship’s leading category.

Lynn targets Le Mans glory with McLaren

Lynn described the opportunity to represent McLaren as particularly meaningful because of the manufacturer’s British identity and motorsport history.

“As a British driver, is there any bigger honour than being a McLaren Racing driver? I don’t think so,” Lynn said in the team’s official announcement.

He acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the new programme, particularly against established Hypercar manufacturers such as Ferrari, Toyota, Porsche and Cadillac.

The Briton said he could already see McLaren establishing the foundations for a potential championship-winning organisation under CEO Zak Brown and Hypercar team principal James Barclay.

Lynn’s ambitions are closely aligned with McLaren’s objective of returning to the top step of the Le Mans podium. The manufacturer famously won the race overall in 1995 with the McLaren F1 GTR, and its new prototype represents a return to the highest level of endurance racing.

The 2027 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is scheduled for June 9–13, with McLaren aiming to compete for outright honours rather than a class victory.

Cadillac loses key driver as McLaren strengthens

Lynn’s departure comes during a substantial restructuring of Cadillac’s WEC programme.

The American manufacturer has confirmed that António Félix da Costa and Ricky Taylor will replace Lynn and Bourdais in 2027, while Jack Aitken, Earl Bamber, Norman Nato and Will Stevens remain.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO reported in its coverage of Cadillac’s 2027 driver changes, the reshuffle will change two positions across JOTA’s pair of V-Series.R prototypes.

Lynn’s departure is significant because of his contribution to Cadillac’s development. In addition to his Le Mans pole position, he helped the manufacturer secure its breakthrough overall WEC victory at Interlagos alongside Stevens and Nato.

The Briton also has experience beyond Hypercar competition. He won the Macau Grand Prix in 2013, claimed the GP3 championship in 2014, achieved victories in Formula E and secured the 2023 European Le Mans Series LMP2 title.

He also won the LMGTE Pro class at Le Mans in 2020, giving him a record of success across multiple endurance categories.

Lynn has missed much of the 2026 WEC season after undergoing neck surgery, but is scheduled to return with Cadillac at Barcelona before completing his commitments to the American manufacturer.

Barclay praises Lynn’s technical experience

McLaren Hypercar team principal James Barclay emphasised that the signing brings more than outright speed to the new programme.

“We are delighted to welcome Alex to the McLaren Hypercar Team,” Barclay said.

He described Lynn as a proven winner whose technical understanding and experience would strengthen McLaren’s preparations for the WEC.

That knowledge is especially valuable during the development of a new LMDh prototype. McLaren must establish its operating procedures, refine the car’s performance and build a competitive race organisation while preparing to compete against manufacturers with years of Hypercar experience.

The confirmed trio of Lynn, Jensen and Vanthoor gives the team an experienced foundation, although McLaren has not yet announced its complete driver allocation across its planned WEC entries.

The MCL-HY programme is being developed with United Autosports, and further driver announcements are expected before the beginning of the 2027 season.

GRANDE PRÊMIO will continue following McLaren’s preparations and the wider Hypercar driver market through its endurance racing coverage.

Alex Lynn leaves Cadillac after a landmark Le Mans pole position and the manufacturer’s first WEC victory, becoming McLaren’s third confirmed driver for its ambitious 2027 Hypercar programme.

{"42wp_featured_image_caption":"Alex Lynn","42wp_featured_image_credits":"McLaren","42wp_featured_video":"","42wp_ai_content_disclaimer":"","42wp_is_ai_content":false,"42wp_featured_image_hidden":false,"42wp_authors_list":
"42wp_breaking_news":false
47
850,503,10,50],"42wp_author":[48
post-4078","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wec","tag-alex-lynn","tag-le-mans","tag-mclaren","tag-wec","42wp_author-giovani-danjo
["GET
