The result did not change the championship standings, but it placed the two title contenders in very different positions before Saturday’s qualifying and sprint.

Márquez finds speed and stability despite Friday crash

Márquez’s Friday was not completely straightforward. The championship leader lost the front of his Ducati at Turn 15 during the afternoon session, forcing him to return to the pits before resuming his programme.

The interruption reduced his available track time, but did not prevent him from finding the pace needed to lead the field.

In the closing stages, the Spaniard produced a 1:57.000, nearly four tenths faster than the provisional best time at that moment. His brother eventually reduced the gap to 0.109 seconds, while Ai Ogura finished third, 0.167 seconds behind.

The fastest lap also secured Márquez direct passage into Q2, removing the need to compete in the first qualifying segment.

More significant than the single-lap result was his performance during longer runs. Márquez showed competitive pace as his tyres accumulated laps, providing Ducati with useful information for Saturday’s sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix.

The Spaniard acknowledged that his crash had reduced his time on track, but highlighted the pace he had found as the tyres lost grip.

That combination of one-lap speed and sustained performance gives Márquez more than a favourable position on the timesheets. It allows Ducati to approach Saturday with evidence that its motorcycle can be competitive over different phases of a race.

The complete Friday Practice report details how Márquez recovered from his fall and secured the fastest time.

Marco Bezzecchi and Marc Márquez (Photo: AFP)

Martín faces a different challenge: completing the weekend

For Martín, outright speed was not the only issue.

The Aprilia rider returned to competition just six days after fracturing the distal radius of his right forearm in the Australian sprint at Phillip Island.

The Spaniard received medical clearance to participate in Friday’s sessions and completed 12 laps in FP1. Although he remained almost two seconds away from Márquez’s morning benchmark, the mileage allowed doctors to assess his ability to control the motorcycle.

He was subsequently declared fit to continue competing.

However, that authorisation did not eliminate the physical consequences of the fracture.

During the afternoon, Martín suffered a moment at a fast left-hand corner and returned to the garage. After just three laps, Aprilia decided to end his programme.

The team explained that attempting a fast lap would require considerable physical effort from the injured rider.

Team manager Paolo Bonora confirmed that the decision had been taken in consultation with MotoGP medical director Ángel Charte.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO reported, Aprilia has left Martín’s continued participation in Malaysia uncertain, with another assessment planned before Saturday’s activity.

Unlike Márquez, whose main task was refining the setup of a competitive motorcycle, Martín spent Friday attempting to establish how much physical effort his injured wrist could tolerate.

That difference will remain relevant throughout the weekend.

Jorge Martín (Photo: Michelin)

Medical clearance does not remove the demands of racing

Martín’s return required approval from MotoGP’s medical team, but Friday demonstrated the distinction between being medically cleared and being able to complete a competitive programme.

The Spaniard was allowed to ride after his post-FP1 examination. Aprilia nevertheless chose to stop the afternoon session because of the demands associated with a time attack.

Sepang features substantial braking zones, rapid changes of direction and high temperatures. The rider’s right hand must repeatedly operate the throttle and front brake, exposing the injured wrist to significant loads.

A single lap can be managed with a different level of physical effort from a sequence of qualifying runs or a race distance.

That progression is central to Martín’s weekend.

Saturday’s FP2 will provide another opportunity to assess his condition. If he continues, he must then attempt Q1 before potentially progressing to Q2.

The sprint follows later the same day.

Rather than simply needing to recover the pace lost on Friday, Martín faces the additional requirement of sustaining that performance through several sessions.

His medical clearance and the restrictions surrounding his return have shaped Aprilia’s approach since the beginning of the Malaysian weekend.

Q1 creates another obstacle for Martín’s championship defence

Friday Practice determines which ten riders advance directly into Q2.

Márquez secured the fastest time and therefore avoided Q1 entirely.

Martín, unable to complete his afternoon programme, finished 21st with a 1:59.670 — 2.670 seconds slower than Márquez.

If he continues participating, the Aprilia rider must compete in Q1, where only the two fastest competitors reach the final qualifying segment.

That creates a demanding sequence for a rider recovering from a fracture.

Even if Martín is physically capable of returning to the circuit, he will have fewer opportunities to conserve energy before Saturday’s sprint.

A difficult qualifying result could also leave him fighting through traffic, increasing the number of overtaking manoeuvres required to reach the points-paying positions.

Márquez faces the opposite situation.

His direct Q2 place offers an opportunity to secure a starting position near the front without an additional qualifying session.

It does not guarantee pole position or a strong race result, but the advantage is tangible.

The difference between the two riders therefore extends beyond Friday’s lap times. It also affects the amount of work each must complete before the first championship points of the weekend are awarded.

Ten-point title gap puts Saturday’s sprint in focus

Márquez arrived in Malaysia with 365 points, compared with 355 for Martín.

The gap emerged after the Australian sprint, where Márquez won and Martín crashed while fighting for the lead.

Sunday’s Grand Prix at Phillip Island was cancelled because poor visibility prevented the medical helicopter from operating safely.

With no points awarded for the main race, Martín travelled to Sepang only ten points behind despite his injury.

Four rounds remained before Malaysia, offering a maximum of 148 championship points across the remaining sprints and Grands Prix.

The Malaysian weekend alone offers 37: 12 for sprint victory and 25 for winning Sunday’s race.

MotoGP 2026 — Championship position before Malaysia

Pos.

Rider

Team

Points

Gap

1

M. direction quickly.

However, Friday introduced two separate questions into the title battle.

The first is whether Márquez can convert the speed demonstrated during Practice into points.

The second is whether Martín can compete at a level that allows him to limit any potential losses.

If Márquez wins Saturday’s sprint and Martín scores nothing, the gap would increase from ten to 22 points before Sunday’s Grand Prix.

If Martín wins and Márquez fails to score, the Aprilia rider would instead move two points ahead.

Those contrasting possibilities illustrate the importance of the Malaysian Grand Prix championship scenarios.

Friday has not determined which outcome will occur, but it has established the competitive and physical conditions from which the two rivals must approach Saturday.

Ducati has pace while Aprilia must manage more than performance

The wider Friday results also provide context for the contest between Ducati and Aprilia.

Álex Márquez finished second on his Gresini Ducati, confirming that the manufacturer’s competitiveness was not limited to its factory team.

Fabio Di Giannantonio took fifth and Franco Morbidelli ninth for VR46, giving Ducati four riders in the top ten.

Aprilia placed Ogura third and Marco Bezzecchi sixth, demonstrating that the RS-GP also possesses competitive speed at Sepang.

Martín’s 21st place cannot therefore be treated as a straightforward measure of Aprilia’s motorcycle performance.

His injury and limited running make a direct comparison with the other Aprilia riders unreliable.

Ogura’s performance, in particular, indicates that the manufacturer has the potential to compete near the front.

For Martín, the question is whether he can access that performance while managing the consequences of his fracture.

Bezzecchi, third in the championship with 315 points, also remains mathematically involved in the title race, although he faces a 50-point deficit to Márquez.

Ducati’s Friday results strengthened Márquez’s preparations, while Aprilia’s most pressing issue remains the physical condition of the rider closest to the championship lead.

Saturday will test pace, endurance and recovery

MotoGP returns to action on Saturday, October 31, with FP2 scheduled for 10:10am Malaysian time.

Q1 begins at 10:50am and Q2 at 11:15am, followed by the sprint at 3:00pm.

For Márquez, the objective will be to maintain the speed and race pace demonstrated on Friday while avoiding further mistakes.

For Martín, Saturday will begin with an assessment of whether his wrist permits him to continue.

His medical clearance has not been revoked, and Aprilia has not announced his definitive withdrawal from the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The team nevertheless acknowledged that it was preferable to stop Friday’s session rather than force a qualifying simulation when the rider was struggling with the physical demands.

The <a
