Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is pleased with the direction the category is taking following planned regulatory adjustments for upcoming seasons. After Max Verstappen voiced frustration over the new rule cycle, the executive stated that with these modifications, the four-time champion is likely to stay on the grid. Even so, he downplayed the impact of a potential departure, reinforcing that the series is bigger than any single individual and will move forward seamlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, F1 introduced a new engine framework that sparked debate due to its 50\/50 power distribution between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the electrical unit (MGU-K). As a result, batteries drain over the course of a lap, reducing available horsepower and forcing drivers to “lift and coast” down high-speed straights to harvest energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address this, a revised power ratio has already been approved for 2027, with the internal combustion engine slated to generate 58% of the power output. Looking ahead to 2028, expectations are to push that ratio further to 60\/40, mitigating the primary complaint raised by drivers: an unintuitive driving style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2027 updates won’t be confined to the power unit. Williams Team Principal James Vowles confirmed that the aerodynamic concept will also undergo substantial changes, particularly targeting the rear wing and floor assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In seeking a balance among fans, drivers, and major automakers, Domenicali believes F1 is headed in the right direction for 2027 and deems it unlikely that Verstappen will walk away over adaptability issues with the new machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I believe drivers who have already tested next year\u2019s cars in the simulator are convinced we are on the right path. I\u2019ve discussed this directly with Max as well. We must remember there is a governance system: changing regulations requires alignment among the FIA, teams, and engine suppliers. We would have preferred to be even bolder in certain areas, but final decisions ultimately depend on what teams are willing to accept,” the F1 CEO stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think Max will be satisfied with this direction. He is an extraordinary driver\u2014I\u2019ve said it so many times it feels repetitive. I believe that if he loves Formula 1 and embraces the future path we are shaping together, he will remain part of it. F1 is large enough to accommodate Max, but naturally, he will decide his own future as he sees fit. My view, as I\u2019ve expressed, is that Max will stay with us. But as I’ve always said, F1 is far bigger than any single person\u2014bigger than all of us,” Domenicali concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
