The FIA announced its decision after Sunday&#8217;s (November 1) race, ruling that the McLaren driver was responsible for the incident that sent the Racing Bulls into the tyre barriers and triggered a Safety Car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sanction increased Piastri&#8217;s gap to race winner Max Verstappen from <strong>19.475s to 29.475s<\/strong>, dropping him eight positions and removing him from the points. The decision also promotes Franco Colapinto to seventh, Liam Lawson to eighth and Pierre Gasly to ninth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FIA holds Piastri responsible for Lindblad collision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to FIA stewards&#8217; document 79, Piastri attempted to overtake Lindblad around the outside approaching Turn 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <strong>the Australian was never fully alongside the Racing Bulls driver and therefore was not entitled to claim the corner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stewards determined that Lindblad defended his position by releasing the brakes through Turn 1, but did not force Piastri off the circuit and left sufficient room on the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collision occurred as the cars approached Turn 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After reviewing video footage, onboard recordings and positioning data, the stewards concluded that <strong>Piastri could have avoided contact by moving further left after Turn 1<\/strong>, even if doing so required temporarily leaving the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The McLaren driver was consequently penalised for breaching Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2(d) of the FIA International Sporting Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was issued at 17:56 local time, after the race had finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Piastri loses eight places as Colapinto and Lawson benefit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Piastri originally crossed the finish line seventh, 19.475s behind Verstappen, but the additional ten seconds left him behind Carlos Sainz and ahead of Nico H\u00fclkenberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colapinto inherits seventh place<\/strong>, securing six points for Alpine, while Lawson completes an extraordinary recovery from a pit-lane start to finish eighth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawson had been <a href=\"https:\/\/grandepremio.com\/en\/f1\/lawson-storms-from-pit-lane-to-ninth-in-mexican-gp-after-qualifying-disqualification\/\">disqualified from qualifying because of an MGU-K technical infringement<\/a>, but fought through the field during Sunday&#8217;s chaotic race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gasly moves to ninth, giving Alpine a double points finish, while <strong>Bortoleto climbs to tenth and collects the final championship point for Audi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Piastri&#8217;s penalty also changes the points distribution in the Drivers&#8217; and Constructors&#8217; Championships, with McLaren losing six points from its provisional Mexican Grand Prix total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mexican GP 2026 \u2014 Revised race results after Piastri penalty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><th>Pos.<\/th><th>Driver<\/th><th>Team \/ Engine<\/th><th>Time \/ Gap<\/th><\/tr><tr><td><strong>1<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>M.
