News Summary

Formula 1 and the FIA have officially announced the 2027 calendar, confirming a 24-race season that begins in Bahrain on March 14 and ends in Abu Dhabi on December 12.

The schedule, approved by the World Motor Sport Council, contains 24 Grands Prix across 22 countries. Portugal and Türkiye return to the championship, while Zandvoort and Barcelona disappear from the calendar. Pre-season testing will take place in Bahrain from February 24-27.

The biggest development accompanying Wednesday’s calendar announcement is a major expansion of the Sprint format. Formula 1 will increase the number of Sprint weekends from 6 to 10, with Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi all hosting Sprints for the first time.

Canada, Great Britain, Italy, São Paulo and Qatar complete the 10-round Sprint schedule. Monaco is particularly significant: the championship will now hold two competitive qualifying sessions around a circuit where track position has traditionally been unusually important because of the difficulty of overtaking.

The announcement also confirms information previously obtained by GRANDE PRÊMIO that Monaco was preparing to host its first F1 Sprint weekend in 2027. The Automobile Club de Monaco programme had listed Sprint Qualifying for Friday June 4 and the Sprint for Saturday June 5, before Formula 1 and the FIA had formally announced the Sprint venues.

There is little respite at the beginning of the championship. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia form the opening double-header before F1 heads to Australia, Japan and China for three consecutive weekends in April.

Portugal’s return takes place at Portimão on June 18-20, two weeks after Monaco. Silverstone follows on July 2-4, ahead of Austria, Belgium and Hungary.

After the August break, Monza starts the second part of the European season on September 3-5 and will also host a Sprint. Madrid follows one week later before F1 moves to Baku, Istanbul and Singapore on three consecutive weekends.

Türkiye’s return is scheduled for October 1-3, although the Istanbul Park event remains subject to FIA circuit homologation.

The Americas then dominate the closing stages. Austin, Mexico City and São Paulo form another triple-header, with the Brazilian GP moving to November 5-7, one week earlier than the provisional calendar we were discussing. Las Vegas follows on November 18-20.

After a weekend off, F1 heads to Qatar on December 3-5 before Abu Dhabi hosts both the season finale and, for the first time, a Sprint weekend on December 10-12.

The dates and Sprint designations above are those officially published by Formula 1 and the FIA on September 16.

Formula 1 said the expanded Sprint programme follows increased audience demand, citing total viewership on Sprint weekends as 12% higher than on non-Sprint weekends.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted both returning races and the expanded format, saying the championship was “thrilled to welcome Portugal and Türkiye” and increase Sprint racing to 10 events.
