South Africa could soon return to the Formula 1 calendar. According to Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1 / Liberty Media, talks are making progress to bring a Grand Prix back to the country, which has not hosted a World Championship race since 1993.
Despite the statement, the executive did not offer a specific timeline for when the Kyalami circuit might reclaim a spot on the schedule. Furthermore, he explained that other venues are also interested in hosting F1 races and that this will happen down the road.
“What I can say is that negotiations are progressing very well in Africa. In fact, I often forget—because things are happening so fast—that next year we have Portugal back and Turkey back, which are new additions. So, again, other places will host a GP in the future,” he stated.
Finally, the Italian revealed ongoing conversations in the Far East beyond the Japanese and Chinese Grands Prix. However, the sport has no interest in adding more rounds in the region before the market is fully consolidated.
“We are having another discussion with South Africa, and we are having discussions in the Far East. What I can say is that we have more requests than just China and Japan, but for now, we want to stick with one race in China because we need to better consolidate the market before considering another option there,” he added.
Formula 1 is currently on summer break. The series resumes 2026 season action from August 21 to 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
