News summary

The FIA’s decision to strip Pierre Gasly of his Monaco GP podium has changed more than the final result of the race. The reinstatement of the Alpine driver’s penalties also altered the 2026 Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship standings, with several teams and drivers gaining or losing points as a result.

Gasly had initially finished third in Monaco, but was one of five drivers penalized for exceeding the FIA’s 60 km/h pit-lane speed limit during the race. Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Franco Colapinto and Oscar Piastri were also penalized.

Gasly was handed two five-second penalties after being recorded at 60.1 km/h and 60.4 km/h in the pit lane. Those penalties initially dropped him from third to seventh in the classification.

Alpine subsequently requested a review, arguing that the pit-lane section used to calculate the speed had been measured incorrectly. The stewards accepted the request on June 12, rescinded both penalties and amended the race classification and championship points.

Red Bull and McLaren appealed that decision, however, taking the case to the FIA International Court of Appeal. The hearing took place in Paris on August 25.

On Friday (September 4), the FIA published the Court’s decision. The appeals from Red Bull and McLaren were granted, the June 12 decisions were set aside and Gasly’s two original five-second penalties were reinstated. The Court also ordered the competent sporting authority to amend the race classification and championship points.

The reversal means that Hadjar, who had originally been classified fourth after the penalties were removed, returns to the third step of the podium. Gasly, meanwhile, is back in seventh.

The points impact is significant for the championship. Hadjar gains three points and moves to 71, while Piastri gains two and rises to 106. Lawson also benefits from the revised classification and now has 51 points, while Lindblad moves to 25.

Gasly suffers the biggest individual loss, dropping nine points from his previous total of 44. The Alpine driver therefore falls to 35 points in the Drivers’ Championship.

The Constructors’ Championship is affected as well. Red Bull gains three points through Hadjar and moves to 189, while McLaren receives two additional points from Piastri and reaches 265.

Racing Bulls benefits from the revised results of both Lawson and Lindblad, gaining four points in total and moving to 70 points. Alpine, in contrast, loses nine and falls to 54, leaving the team behind its Faenza-based rival.
