Lando Norris flew through the closing stages of Q3 during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix this Saturday (July 25), snatching pole position as the clock hit zero by edging out Lewis Hamilton by just 0.012s with a lap time of 1m17s207. This marks the reigning World Champion’s first pole position of 2026, a feat he celebrated while admitting he was pleasantly surprised by the result.

Afterwards, the McLaren driver detailed how the session unfolded, particularly the battle against Ferrari, who line up second with Hamilton and third with Leclerc. Furthermore, he praised the upgrades introduced by the papaya squad this weekend, noting that the new parts on the car “made the difference” in qualifying.

“Extremely happy to be back on top. It was a tough qualifying session. Ferrari was very fast. The battle has been tight all weekend, but we’ve looked competitive right from the opening laps and brought some upgrades,” Norris analyzed.

“It’s always hard to say exactly how much they help in terms of lap time, but they certainly made the difference today. I’m really happy to be back on top, especially at a circuit where you definitely want to start from pole,” he continued.

Norris then confessed his surprise at grabbing pole, as he felt he hadn’t put together his cleanest laps in Q3. Nevertheless, he once again praised McLaren’s performance throughout the weekend so far.

“I felt confident all day. The laps in Q3 weren’t my absolute best, not even the last one, so I was pleasantly surprised to finish ahead. We’ve been doing a solid job. The car is handling well and giving me a lot of confidence. I pushed extra hard on that final lap—some parts worked out, some didn’t, but the main thing is that we delivered when it counted. I’m really pleased for the team. A huge thank you to everyone for their hard work, and tomorrow we have another major mission ahead,” Norris concluded.

Antes, o piloto #1 da McLaren detalhou como foi a sessão e, em especial, a disputa contra a Ferrari, que aparece em segundo com Hamilton e terceiro com Leclerc. Além disso, exaltou as atualizações apresentadas pela equipe papaia neste fim de semana e disse que as novidades no carro “fizeram a diferença” na classificação.

“Muito feliz por voltar ao topo. Foi uma classificação difícil. A Ferrari estava muito rápida. A disputa esteve apertada durante todo o fim de semana, mas parecemos competitivos desde as primeiras voltas e trouxemos algumas atualizações”, analisou Norris.

“É difícil saber o quanto elas ajudam em termos de tempo de volta, mas certamente fizeram diferença hoje. Estou muito feliz por voltar ao topo, especialmente em uma pista onde você realmente quer largar na pole”, seguiu.

Norris, então, admitiu que ficou surpreso com a pole-position, já que não entende que fez as melhores voltas possíveis no Q3 da classificação. Ainda assim, exaltou novamente o trabalho feito pela McLaren no fim de semana até então.

“Tive confiança durante todo o dia. As voltas no Q3 não foram as melhores, nem mesmo a última, então fiquei positivamente surpreso por terminar na frente. Temos feito um bom trabalho. O carro está se comportando bem e tenho tido bastante confiança. Forcei mais na última volta — algumas coisas deram certo, outras não, mas o mais importante é que conseguimos no fim. Estou muito satisfeito pela equipe. Um grande obrigado a todos pelo trabalho duro, e amanhã teremos mais uma grande missão pela frente”, encerrou Norris.
