News Summary

Toto Wolff has hit back at Helmut Marko after the former Red Bull motorsport adviser questioned whether George Russell would ever get another opportunity to fight for the Formula 1 world championship.

The Mercedes team principal defended his driver’s ability and argued that Russell’s struggles in 2026 should not overshadow his previous achievements. Wolff believes the Briton remains capable of winning a title if the team provides him with a competitive car that better suits his driving style.

Marko had cast doubt on Russell’s long-term prospects after Kimi Antonelli moved to the brink of securing the 2026 drivers’ championship. The Italian has won nine races in his second F1 season, compared with three victories for his more experienced teammate.

Russell entered the campaign as a title contender after a strong 2025 season, but Antonelli has consistently outperformed him. Following the Italian’s victory at the United States Grand Prix, Russell trails his teammate by 123 points, with 125 still available across the final five rounds.

Speaking after the race in Austin, Wolff acknowledged the difficult situation Russell faces but rejected Marko’s assessment of his future.

“I start with Helmut. I mean, he’s my Austrian, not-so-buddy, but I respect his opinion. But I think he’s wrong on George,” Wolff said.

“George has all the ability. I think the car doesn’t suit him.”

Wolff believes Russell can still become F1 champion

Wolff argued that Russell’s difficulties have to be considered in the context of the major technical regulation changes introduced for the 2026 season.

The Mercedes boss suggested that Russell’s expectations at the start of the campaign may also have made it harder to cope with Antonelli’s rapid progress. Having entered the year believing he could challenge for the title, Russell instead found himself increasingly overshadowed by his younger teammate.

“I think that at the beginning of the season, it’s maybe difficult to cope with a situation where you’re feeling like this is my year to come, and then you have this wunderkind on the other side that starts to really chip away,” Wolff explained.

Nevertheless, the Austrian remains convinced that Russell can recover in a future campaign.

“And I believe that in a new season, George, if we provide him with a quick car, it’s absolutely possible. He has absolutely what it takes to win a championship,” he added.

Wolff also highlighted Russell’s record before reaching Formula 1, arguing that his previous success provides evidence of his ability to compete at the highest level.

Russell won the GP3 Series in 2017 before claiming the Formula 2 title in 2018, both in his rookie seasons. He also won consecutive European karting championships, achievements Wolff believes should not be dismissed because of one difficult campaign.

“It’s a bit too easy to say, let’s forget about all these years where he won in F2 and in F3 in his rookie years and the European championships back-to-back in karting. That’s still all there,” the Mercedes boss said.

Mercedes working to understand Russell’s struggles

Wolff also addressed the performance gap between Russell and Antonelli, insisting that the difference does not reflect a fundamental lack of speed from the British driver.

The team principal acknowledged that Russell has struggled more than Antonelli when the Mercedes car falls outside the setup window that suits his driving style. When the team manages to find a configuration that works for him, however, Wolff believes Russell remains exceptionally quick.

“George, for all of us in the team, is a champion and has won in every category, and I think he merits to be put in the group of the very best ones. We’ve seen that last year,” Wolff said.

The Mercedes boss admitted that the team still needs to understand why Russell experiences greater difficulties than Antonelli when the car’s balance and setup do not meet his preferences.

“When we land the car in the way that suits him, he’s absolutely fast. But when it drops out of that operational window, he struggles, and he struggles more than maybe Kimi. And that is on us,” Wolff explained.

He added that Mercedes must work with Russell to identify the changes needed to help him extract more performance from the car.

“George is not half a second slower, three tenths slower than Kimi. That’s just absolutely not the case,” Wolff insisted.

The team principal said Russell still has the intelligence, ability and determination required to succeed, leaving Mercedes responsible for finding a solution to the performance fluctuations that have defined his season.

Marko questions Russell’s future after Antonelli’s rise

Marko’s comments came after Antonelli’s victory in Austin further strengthened his position in the championship battle.

The former Red Bull adviser argued that the Italian had taken over as Mercedes’ leading driver and questioned whether Russell would ever again be given the opportunity to compete for a world title.

“Russell is no longer the number one driver. Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him,” Marko said.

The Austrian nevertheless acknowledged Russell’s talent, describing him as one of the top drivers on the grid. His doubts centred on whether the British driver would receive another opportunity to fight for the championship.

“I doubt whether he’ll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere,” Marko added.

Russell had started 2026 with a victory at the Australian Grand Prix and appeared well positioned to challenge for the championship. Antonelli, however, quickly established himself as a serious contender, winning five consecutive races earlier in the season and maintaining his advantage thereafter.

The Italian’s victory in Austin means he can secure the championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, provided the relevant results fall his way.

Wolff’s response makes clear that Mercedes does not view Russell’s current difficulties as a definitive verdict on his future. The team principal believes that, with the right car and a fresh opportunity, his driver can still compete for Formula 1’s biggest prize.
