Toto Wolff admitted Mercedes had the “racing god” on its side in the Spanish Grand Prix after a perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car transformed Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s afternoon and helped the Italian secure his eighth victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Lando Norris had controlled the opening stint at Madring and held an advantage of more than 7 seconds when Lance Stroll stopped at Turn 20. Norris had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was activated, while Antonelli was still able to dive into the pits and dramatically reduce the time normally lost during a tyre change.
Mercedes reacted immediately. Wolff revealed that the entire process — from recognising that Stroll’s Aston Martin would not be cleared quickly to getting the instruction to Antonelli — took approximately three seconds.
“I think we’ve been mostly unlucky with VSCs and safety cars this year,” Wolff told Sky Sports. “Today, the race god was with us, and we were able to literally pull him in when the VSC came out.”
The Mercedes team principal nevertheless acknowledged how unfortunate the timing had been for McLaren.
“So, it’s unfortunate for McLaren, because they were just past. But he drove well; very, very well.”
Mercedes’ reaction was not entirely improvised. Wolff explained that the strategy team was already considering the possibility of a neutralisation after Stroll stopped.
“The process was great today, because the strategy group had it on their mind, obviously,” he said. “Someone said, ‘That’s not going to clear quickly with the Aston Martin in the wall,’ and then it was strategy 2.0. Bono double-checked, Bono to Kimi, and that was all in about three seconds.”
The intervention fundamentally changed a race that Norris had appeared set to win. Antonelli capitalised on the VSC while Norris lost further time with his subsequent pit stop, leaving the Mercedes driver in position to take the lead once Charles Leclerc eventually stopped.
Antonelli himself acknowledged afterwards that Norris had deserved the victory, but the result further strengthened his grip on the championship. The Italian now leads George Russell by 81 points after 14 rounds.
Wolff was particularly impressed by how little the championship situation appears to be affecting his 20-year-old driver.
“I think he’s cool,” Wolff said. “Sometimes for me an inch too cool.”
“When he brushes the wall five laps to the end and comes on the radio and says, ‘Check the car. I think I brushed the wall,’ you’re like, ‘Really? Again? White lines, walls.’ But maybe that’s how he keeps himself in the zone.”
Despite Antonelli’s commanding championship position, Mercedes is refusing to treat the title fight as settled. Russell remains his closest challenger, while Wolff stressed that reliability can still transform a championship quickly.
The focus, he said, remains on continuing to develop and execute rather than calculating points.
