Lando Norris admitted frustration after seeing a likely Spanish Grand Prix victory disappear through the timing of the Virtual Safety Car at Madring.
After beating Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011s to pole, Norris controlled the opening stint and built a lead of more than 6s.
Everything changed when Lance Stroll stopped on lap 15.
Norris had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was activated, allowing Antonelli and Max Verstappen to stop at reduced cost. By the time Norris returned to the pits one lap later, green-flag racing had resumed.
A slow stop then made matters worse and left the McLaren fifth.
“We were just unlucky,” Norris said after the race. “Sometimes these things go for you, sometimes they don’t.”

Norris recovered through the second half of the race and eventually caught Verstappen, but could not find a way past the Red Bull.
That left him third behind Verstappen and race winner Antonelli.
The reigning world champion nevertheless took encouragement from McLaren’s pace. Norris had been the quickest driver before the VSC and again had enough speed to close rapidly on Verstappen late in the race.
The problem was overtaking.
Verstappen himself admitted afterwards that Norris was faster but joked that defending at Madring was simply a matter of keeping his car in the middle of the circuit.
Norris leaves Madrid fourth in the Drivers’ Championship with 186 points, only 5 behind Lewis Hamilton in third. Antonelli leads with 292.
