De Vries edges Mortara to secure London E-Prix Race 2 pole as Wehrlein qualifies 3rd

Nyck de Vries claimed pole position for Race 2 of the London E-Prix on Sunday. The Dutchman mounted a dominant qualifying run, defeating Pascal Wehrlein in the semi-finals before edging out Edoardo Mortara in the final duel to secure his first pole position of the season.

The result holds historic weight for Mahindra: after securing the initial pole of the Gen3 era with Lucas Di Grassi at the 2023 Mexico City E-Prix, the Indian manufacturer bookended the era by sweeping the front row.

Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller qualified on the second row in 3rd and 4th after semi-final eliminations. Mitch Evans, Taylor Barnard, Nick Cassidy, and Dan Ticktum rounded out the top eight drivers who reached the duel stage.

Jake Dennis faced a difficult qualifying session. Wehrlein’s primary championship contender struggled to find single-lap pace in Group B and was eliminated before the duels, leaving the Andretti driver starting from 16th on the grid.

How London E-Prix Race 2 Qualifying Unfolded

Group A

Group A featured Pascal Wehrlein, Mitch Evans, António Félix da Costa, Nick Cassidy, Nyck de Vries, Felipe Drugovich, Pepe Martí, Joel Eriksson, Norman Nato, and Lucas Di Grassi, who remained in the garage following FP3 technical issues.

On his initial out-lap, Norman Nato went straight off at the Turns 10–11 chicane, reporting brake issues over team radio before returning to the pit lane and ending his session early. Early benchmark times saw Evans leading ahead of Wehrlein and Drugovich as the only drivers breaking into the 1m09s margin, before Eriksson joined the group in 4th.

With two minutes remaining, track evolution accelerated. Wehrlein set the initial 1m08s benchmark before being surpassed by Evans and Da Costa. De Vries then logged the fastest overall lap, with Cassidy moving into 2nd position behind him.

On the final runs, Wehrlein improved to 2nd position to secure passage to the duels alongside De Vries, Cassidy, and Evans. Da Costa and Drugovich failed to improve sufficiently, leaving both eliminated alongside Martí and Eriksson.

Group B

Group B comprised Jake Dennis, Oliver Rowland, Edoardo Mortara, Nico Müller, Sébastien Buemi, Dan Ticktum, Jean-Éric Vergne, Taylor Barnard, Maximilian Günther, and Zane Maloney.

The second group opened cleanly, with drivers establishing baseline times through the first five minutes. Müller initially set the benchmark before Dennis went faster, followed closely by Barnard and Günther.

Maloney temporarily climbed to 3rd before Mortara took over the top spot, bringing Müller along with him. After brief improvements from Buemi and Günther, Mortara made contact with the wall on his final run and returned to the pits without completing the lap.

Dennis failed to improve on his final attempt. Ticktum made a late improvement to move into 3rd, dropping Dennis out of duel contention. Buemi, Günther, and Vergne subsequently demoted Dennis to 8th in the group, sealing his 16th-place grid spot. Mortara, Müller, Ticktum, and Barnard advanced to the quarter-finals.

Quarter-Finals

Nick Cassidy vs. Pascal Wehrlein Wehrlein established an early lead in sector one before Cassidy clipped the wall in sector two, dropping 0.4s behind. Wehrlein extended his advantage in the final sector to advance comfortably.

Mitch Evans vs. Nyck de Vries Evans held a slight advantage through the opening sector, but De Vries responded in sector two. The Dutchman posted a 0.1s advantage in the final sector to eliminate Evans.

Dan Ticktum vs. Nico Müller Ticktum suffered a lock-up and missed the Turns 10–11 chicane during his sector-one attempt, allowing Müller to complete a clean lap and advance unofficially.

Taylor Barnard vs. Edoardo Mortara Mortara took an early lead before Barnard edged ahead in sector two. Mortara responded in the final sector to secure the semi-final spot despite steering misalignment from his prior wall contact in Group B.
