Marc Márquez wins Malaysian MotoGP as Acosta takes second and title lead grows to 44 points

News Summary

Marc Márquez took another decisive step towards his eighth MotoGP world championship with a commanding victory at the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday (November 1). The Ducati rider seized the initiative from pole-sitter and younger brother Álex Márquez during the opening exchanges at Sepang before controlling the 20-lap race to finish 4.172s ahead of Pedro Acosta, with Álex completing the podium.

The victory took Márquez to 399 championship points, 44 clear of the injured Jorge Martín, who withdrew from the Malaysian weekend after attempting to return from the wrist injury sustained in Australia. The seven-time premier-class champion has now moved into a position where he could secure the 2026 title at the next round in Qatar.

Márquez takes control as Acosta fights through to second

The Malaysian Grand Prix began in demanding conditions, with ambient temperatures reaching 36°C and the track surface exceeding 50°C. All riders selected soft tyres for the 20-lap contest.

Márquez attacked immediately at Turn 1, taking the lead from his brother, although Álex fought back during the opening exchanges before the factory Ducati rider established himself at the front.

Acosta, who had won Saturday’s Malaysian sprint, initially lost ground from third on the grid but quickly recovered.

The KTM rider overtook Ai Ogura to regain third place and began pressuring Álex Márquez for second.

At the front, Marc gradually established a gap, building an advantage of approximately nine tenths over his brother as the race approached half-distance.

Acosta finally passed Álex on lap ten, moving into second and attempting to reduce the gap to the championship leader.

However, Márquez continued to increase his advantage, extending it to more than three seconds by lap 15.

The Ducati rider then managed his tyre wear through the closing stages, crossing the finish line unchallenged to claim his first Malaysian Grand Prix victory since 2018.

Álex Márquez holds off Aprilia as Ogura wins late battle

Behind the leading pair, Álex Márquez faced increasing pressure from Marco Bezzecchi and Ogura as tyre degradation became more significant.

The Gresini Ducati rider had started from pole after beating Marc Márquez and Acosta in Saturday’s qualifying session.

Although he was unable to match his brother’s race pace, Álex defended third place throughout the second half of the Grand Prix.

Bezzecchi initially emerged as his closest challenger, but the Aprilia rider subsequently became involved in a fierce battle with Ogura.

The Japanese rider attacked Bezzecchi repeatedly during the closing laps, with the two making contact as they fought for position.

Ogura eventually prevailed, securing fourth for Trackhouse Aprilia.

Enea Bastianini also found stronger pace late in the race and moved ahead of Bezzecchi, finishing fifth for Tech3 KTM.

Bezzecchi eventually crossed the line sixth, followed by Luca Marini, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Brad Binder and Franco Morbidelli.

Francesco Bagnaia endured a difficult race on the second factory Ducati, finishing only 13th.

Márquez opens 44-point advantage as Martín misses another race

Márquez’s victory has significantly changed the championship picture with three rounds remaining.

The Ducati rider entered Malaysia ten points ahead of Martín, having taken the lead at Phillip Island when the Aprilia rider suffered a wrist fracture during the Australian sprint.

The cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix prevented either rider from scoring additional points on Sunday.

In Malaysia, however, Martín’s attempt to return ended before qualifying.

Aprilia confirmed that the Spaniard lacked sufficient strength under braking, forcing him to withdraw and continue his recovery.

Márquez finished second in Saturday’s sprint, extending his advantage to 19 points, before collecting another 25 with Sunday’s victory.

The championship leader now has 399 points to Martín’s 355, with Bezzecchi third on 332 after finishing sixth.

Márquez can clinch eighth MotoGP title in Qatar

Márquez now has his first opportunity to secure the 2026 championship at the Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for November 6–8.

With 44 points separating Márquez and Martín, the Ducati rider could establish an unassailable advantage before the final two rounds in Portugal and Valencia.

The championship leader needs to leave Qatar with a margin of at least 74 points to guarantee the title, meaning he must gain at least 30 points on Martín across the sprint and Grand Prix.

That calculation assumes the remaining calendar proceeds as scheduled.

The Qatar event has nevertheless been the subject of considerable debate over regional security concerns.

MotoGP organisers have maintained their intention to proceed, despite requests from riders for additional guarantees concerning travel, evacuation and repatriation.

The next round could therefore become decisive both for the championship and for the wider dispute surrounding the event.
