Blaney’s dominant race ends against Bristol wall

Blaney had controlled much of the evening after starting 29th. The Penske driver won Stage 2 and led a race-high 202 laps despite losing track position because of a pit-entry penalty during the final stage.

He recovered to pass Hocevar for second on lap 457 and then moved towards the inside to cover the Spire Motorsports driver’s preferred line. Hocevar did not lift and made contact with the rear of the No. 12 Ford, sending Blaney into the outside wall at Turn 1.

The damage ended Blaney’s race after 457 laps. He was classified 33rd and fell three places to sixth in the championship, 52 points behind the new leader.

“I got crashed,” Blaney said after the incident. “I got inside the 77 and cleared him off Turn 4. He never lifted and hooked me in the left rear.”

Hocevar accepted that Blaney had reason to be furious but disputed the suggestion that the collision had been entirely deliberate.

“I understand why he’s upset,” Hocevar said. “That’s probably his championship, so I understand 100%. I’d probably be mad at me too. Whether it was his mistake, my mistake or my fault, I’d be pretty pissed if I was him.”

Hocevar and Blaney exchange punches on pit road

Blaney approached Hocevar beside the No. 77 Chevrolet after the chequered flag and shoved his rival. Hocevar immediately responded with a punch before officials and team members moved between the drivers.

Blaney repeatedly attempted to reach Hocevar again as crew members restrained both competitors. Neither driver appeared injured, while spectators overlooking pit road stood and cheered during the confrontation.

Hocevar later acknowledged the crowd and joked that Bristol could use the fight to promote its next NASCAR event.

“They got an old-school Bristol show,” he said. “Hopefully, they can sell some tickets next year and improve ticket sales.”

The 23-year-old added that he had reacted after Blaney initiated the physical confrontation.

“He grabbed me, and I was like, ‘OK, I’m not going to wait.’ I think everybody saw the intensity of the Chase. I don’t know if he’s mad at me, mad at the situation or both, or if I’m just an easy punching bag.”

NASCAR had not announced any penalties for either driver immediately after the race.

Larson takes NASCAR championship lead

Larson’s runner-up finish moved him into the championship lead by one point over Denny Hamlin, who placed eighth. Logano gained four positions and now sits third, 16 points behind Larson.

Hocevar’s third place helped limit the consequences of the confrontation for his own title campaign, while Blaney suffered the largest setback among the leading contenders despite having dominated most of the race.
