News Summary

Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryō Hirakawa won the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship drivers’ title at Monza on Sunday, finishing 11th in the #8 Toyota. At the front, Jack Aitken, Sébastien Bourdais and Earl Bamber took Cadillac’s first win of the season, holding off Alpine in the closing stages of the six-hour finale.

Cadillac takes the lead early and holds off Alpine

Aitken started third after Ferrari took pole for its home race. He passed Miguel Molina’s #50 Ferrari on the opening lap, then took the lead from Daniel Juncadella’s #19 Genesis at Parabolica. The Genesis was still running second when a technical problem forced Paul-Loup Chatin to stop at Ascari early in the third hour.

Bourdais kept the Cadillac ahead as the #36 Alpine and #20 BMW closed in. A crash for Charles Milesi in the sister #35 Alpine brought out another safety car, and Victor Martins passed Sheldon van der Linde at the first chicane on the restart to retake second. Martins closed on Bamber as the Cadillac saved fuel, but the #38 completed 191 laps and finished 5.607 seconds clear of the Alpine he shared with Jules Gounon.

Tom Gamble passed the #51 Ferrari late in the race to take third in the #007 Aston Martin he shared with Harry Tincknell. It was the Valkyrie’s first WEC podium. The Ferrari finished fourth, with the #94 Peugeot fifth in the provisional race classification.

Toyota’s #8 seals the title from 11th

Toyota had already clinched the manufacturers’ championship in Barcelona and ruled out team orders for the Monza finale. The #8 arrived 17 points ahead of the #7, and that margin held as both cars finished outside the points. Mike Conway ended his professional career with 12th place alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries.

It was a fifth WEC drivers’ championship for both Buemi and Hartley and a third for Hirakawa. The three previously won together in 2022 and 2023.

Porsche wins LMGT3 by 0.270 seconds as Edgar takes the title

Yasser Shahin, Riccardo Pera and Richard Lietz took a second consecutive class victory in the #92 The Bend Manthey Porsche. Lietz held off Eduardo Barrichello by 0.270 seconds, leaving the #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin of Barrichello, Gray Newell and Jonny Adam second.

The #33 Corvette recovered from an early virtual safety car infringement to finish third. That was enough for Jonny Edgar to win the LMGT3 drivers’ championship outright and for TF Sport to secure the teams’ title, even with its closest rival winning the race.
