Mercedes hit the ground running under the 2026 regulations, allowing Andrea Kimi Antonelli to string together victories and enter the summer break with a 50-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship over runner-up Lewis Hamilton. Although the position appears comfortable, team principal Toto Wolff avoided labeling the young Italian as the title favorite.

Antonelli gelled seamlessly with the new Mercedes car. After kicking off the season with a second-place finish in Australia, he claimed five consecutive victories between the Chinese and Monaco Grands Prix before returning to the top step of the podium in Belgium. This strong run of results has put the Italian in a prime position to set his sights on a maiden F1 crown.

However, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, as reliability has emerged as Mercedes’ greatest weakness in 2026. Antonelli himself suffered a DNF at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona and scored zero points in Great Britain due to mechanical failures. Consequently, with 12 rounds still remaining on the calendar, Wolff insists the team cannot afford to get comfortable.

“It’s way too early to talk about the championship. I’m superstitious—even if the gap is 50 points, there are still many races left, and one or two DNFs can change everything dramatically. We haven’t been particularly strong on reliability,” the Mercedes boss stated.

“We need to keep maximizing every single day, from Friday through Sunday, and hopefully at the end, that will be enough,” Wolff concluded.

Formula 1 is currently on summer break. The series resumes 2026 season action from August 21 to 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
