News Summary

Maximilian Günther will race for Envision from the 2026/27 Formula E season after signing a multi-year agreement with the British team for the beginning of the GEN4 era.

The move confirms a change that had been expected since July. The German subsequently confirmed his departure from DS Penske at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Günther arrives as Envision prepares for a major reset. Sébastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson will both leave the race line-up, although Buemi will remain involved in an advisory and development capacity.

The 29-year-old said the opportunity to join Envision at the beginning of Formula E’s new technical cycle was a major attraction.

“I’m very excited to join Envision Racing for the start of the GEN4 era,” Günther said. “The team has achieved great success in Formula E and has a strong reputation for performance and innovation.”

“For me, this is a very exciting new chapter, and I’m looking forward to working with everyone in the team and building something successful together.”

Günther has been a full-time Formula E driver since the 2018/19 season and has raced for Dragon, BMW Andretti, Nissan, Maserati and DS Penske. His victories have come with three different manufacturers, establishing him among the most experienced drivers of his generation in the championship.

Envision’s decision also gives the team an experienced reference point for the introduction of GEN4, Formula E’s most powerful car yet.

The team has already extended its technical relationship with Jaguar into the new regulations. The GEN4 package will produce as much as 600kW of power and introduce permanent all-wheel drive, while Formula E expects speeds above 335km/h.

Envision Managing Director and CTO Sylvain Filippi welcomed Günther as a key part of the team’s next cycle.

“Maximilian has proven himself to be one of the fastest and most accomplished drivers in Formula E,” Filippi said. “His experience, speed and technical understanding will be incredibly valuable as we enter GEN4.”

“We’re delighted to welcome him to the team and we’re looking forward to beginning this new chapter together.”

Günther’s arrival also ends his association with DS Penske after two seasons. He joined the team for the beginning of the GEN3 Evo period and scored victories including Formula E’s first race featuring PIT BOOST.

The move comes amid significant change at Envision. The squad will compete as Paysafe Envision Racing from the 2026/27 season after announcing a new title partnership, while continuing as a Jaguar customer.

Günther’s team-mate has yet to be officially announced. Former Williams junior Zak O’Sullivan is set to take the second seat after testing with Envision during GEN4 development running.

The 2026/27 campaign will begin in December and mark the start of Formula E’s GEN4 era.
