Key takeaways

Chip Ganassi, owner of Chip Ganassi Racing, highlighted that the inaugural Washington GP — named the Freedom 250 — presents a significant platform for IndyCar’s growth. However, he urged event organizers and stakeholders to keep the event centered on racing rather than letting it become “politically charged.”

The Washington GP takes place on a temporary street circuit constructed around the U.S. Capitol. Announced as a late addition to the schedule in January, the event was spearheaded by series broadcaster FOX — which owns a one-third stake in IndyCar — and received strong support from U.S. President Donald Trump.

“I hope it remains a sporting event and doesn’t turn into something politically charged. IndyCar isn’t about that,” Ganassi stated. “I’m sure both Republicans and Democrats go to the races, so let’s leave politics aside. It will be a great race, a fantastic venue, and certainly a source of pride for the people who put this together.”

Since its announcement, the race has garnered widespread attention across North America. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) even announced a three-hour air traffic freeze at nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to accommodate security protocols for attending government officials.

For Ganassi, whose driver Álex Palou arrives at the event with a opportunity to secure his fifth series championship, the venue offers a chance to prove the sport’s adaptiveness.

“It’s a huge opportunity for IndyCar because it puts us in front of a different audience right in the nation’s capital,” Ganassi added. “There will certainly be chances for the series to gain visibility. The important thing is to show through this event that we’re not like an old dog that can’t learn new tricks. The series is betting on new ideas and new venues, and that’s what IndyCar needs right now. That’s what all sports need.”
