Fermín Aldeguer has confirmed that surgery on his fractured right hand was successful, following a difficult Indonesian Grand Prix weekend that ended with the Gresini Ducati rider crashing out of Sunday’s race.
The 21-year-old Spaniard underwent the procedure in Barcelona after suffering a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal bone, which connects the thumb to the wrist.
Aldeguer sustained the injury when he crashed at Turn 16 on the second lap of the Indonesian Grand Prix, having moved into fourth position during the opening stages.
The operation was performed by renowned motorcycle racing specialist Dr Xavier Mir, with Aldeguer subsequently providing an update through social media.
“Another bump in this 2026… rider OK!!!” Aldeguer wrote, thanking the surgeon and his medical team.
Aldeguer faces uncertain Australian GP return
Although the surgery was successful, Gresini has not confirmed when Aldeguer will be able to return to competition.
The next MotoGP round takes place at Phillip Island from October 23 to 25, giving the Spaniard less than two weeks to recover from the operation.
The injury affects an area of the hand that is particularly important for gripping the handlebars, controlling the throttle and operating the motorcycle under heavy braking.
His participation will depend on the progress of his recovery and the medical assessments required before he can return to racing.
Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi had already expressed doubts about Aldeguer’s chances of competing in Australia, according to Sky Italia.
Gresini has not announced a replacement rider.

Four crashes ended Aldeguer’s Indonesian GP weekend
Aldeguer arrived at Mandalika hoping to repeat his breakthrough performance from 2025, when he claimed his first MotoGP victory at the Indonesian circuit.
Instead, he suffered four crashes across the weekend.
Two accidents during Friday’s practice sessions forced him into Q1, while another fall during qualifying complicated his preparations for the race.
Despite those setbacks, Aldeguer secured sixth place on the starting grid.
He made a strong start on Sunday and moved into fourth, but his race ended at Turn 16 on lap two.
Medical examinations subsequently revealed the fracture, prompting Gresini to arrange surgery in Barcelona.
Another injury setback in difficult 2026 season
The latest injury is Aldeguer’s third significant physical setback of the year.
He suffered a fractured left femur during pre-season preparations, missing the opening round in Thailand.
A further injury at Assen, involving a fractured vertebra, forced him to miss three races during the middle of the championship.
The hand fracture now threatens to interrupt his season again, with the final five rounds scheduled across Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, Portugal and Valencia.
The Australian MotoGP Grand Prix takes place on October 23–25, followed by the Malaysian round at Sepang.
