News Summary

Fermín Aldeguer will undergo surgery after fracturing his right hand during the Indonesian MotoGP Grand Prix, adding another injury setback to a difficult 2026 season for the Gresini Ducati rider.

The 21-year-old Spaniard suffered the fracture during a weekend marked by repeated crashes at Mandalika, where he had celebrated his maiden MotoGP victory one year earlier.

Aldeguer crashed twice during Friday’s practice sessions before suffering another fall in qualifying, although he still managed to secure sixth place on the starting grid.

His race ended almost immediately on Sunday, when he crashed at Turn 16 on the second lap after making a promising start that had lifted him to fourth position.

Following the grand prix, Gresini confirmed that Aldeguer had sustained a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal bone in his right hand, an injury requiring surgical treatment.

Gresini confirms surgery in Barcelona

Aldeguer was scheduled to travel to Barcelona following Sunday’s race to undergo the necessary operation.

The injury affects the metacarpal bone connected to the thumb, an area particularly important for motorcycle control, braking and maintaining a secure grip on the handlebars.

Gresini has not confirmed a definitive recovery period or whether Aldeguer will be fit to participate in the Australian Grand Prix.

The championship has a two-week interval between Indonesia and Australia, providing the Spaniard with some recovery time before the next race weekend.

However, his return will depend on the outcome of the surgery and subsequent medical assessments.

Four crashes turn Mandalika return into difficult weekend

The Indonesian Grand Prix had particular significance for Aldeguer following his breakthrough victory at Mandalika in 2025.

That success established him as one of MotoGP’s most promising young riders, but his return to the circuit proved considerably more difficult.

Two crashes on Friday forced him into Q1, increasing the pressure during Saturday’s qualifying sessions.

He successfully advanced to Q2 and secured sixth on the grid despite another accident, giving himself an opportunity to recover during Sunday’s race.

Aldeguer made a strong start and moved into fourth place, but his challenge ended with a fall at Turn 16 on lap two.

The four crashes across the weekend were followed by confirmation of the hand fracture, requiring another period of medical treatment.

Aldeguer faces another injury setback in 2026

The latest injury follows an already disrupted season for the Gresini rider.

Aldeguer suffered a fractured femur during pre-season testing, an injury that continued to affect his physical condition during the opening part of the championship.

He subsequently sustained another injury at Assen, forcing him to miss three rounds during the middle of the season.

The new hand fracture presents a further complication as the championship approaches its final five events.

Gresini has yet to announce whether a replacement rider will be required if Aldeguer cannot return in time for Phillip Island.

The 2026 MotoGP season continues with the Australian Grand Prix on 23–25 October, followed by the Malaysian round at Sepang.
