News Summary

Jorge Martín produced a superb recovery to win Saturday’s Austrian MotoGP Sprint after Pedro Acosta threw away a seemingly secure victory with only three laps remaining.

The Aprilia rider had started from pole position but dropped as low as eighth during a chaotic opening lap. Martín nevertheless fought his way back through the field before inheriting the lead when Acosta crashed at Turn 2.

Marc Márquez crossed the line 1.026s behind in second, while Martín’s Aprilia team-mate Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium. The result puts Martín back at the top of the MotoGP standings, 3 points ahead of Márquez.

Martín initially retained first place when the lights went out, but he ran slightly wide at Turn 1 and came under immediate pressure from Márquez. The pair arrived side by side at Turn 2, where the Ducati rider forced Martín across the run-off area.

The loss of momentum dropped the polesitter to eighth. Márquez briefly took control at the front, only to run wide himself at the following corner and allow Acosta through.

The KTM rider immediately began building an advantage. Acosta, who had dominated Friday’s practice sessions at the Red Bull Ring, opened a gap of more than 1s over Márquez before stretching it beyond 2s.

Behind him, Martín began a relentless recovery. After an early exchange of positions with Francesco Bagnaia, he passed Ai Ogura and Álex Márquez before closing rapidly on the battle involving Bezzecchi and Marc Márquez.

At the start of lap 7, Martín used the slipstream along the main straight and dived past Bezzecchi for third. One lap later, he repeated the move on Márquez, reclaiming second place and sending his title rival across the outside of the corner.

By then, Acosta was approximately 2.8s clear and appeared to have the race under control. The KTM rider’s pace had reinforced the belief that Austria represented his best remaining opportunity to win with the manufacturer.

But the race changed completely with three laps remaining. Acosta arrived too quickly at Turn 2, missed the braking point and lost the front of the KTM as he entered the chicane.

He slid into the gravel but managed to remount, initially rejoining in 13th. The damage was sufficient to end his challenge, however, and Acosta returned to the pits on the final lap.

That handed the lead to Martín. Márquez briefly reduced the gap during the closing stages, but the Aprilia rider responded and crossed the finish line 1.026s ahead.

The victory completed a remarkable recovery from eighth and gave Martín the maximum 12 Sprint points. Having entered the weekend level with Márquez on 274 points — but behind on the countback of Grand Prix victories — Martín now leads the championship 286-283.

As highlighted by The Race, Martín went from eighth to first despite Acosta appearing comfortably out of reach before the KTM rider’s mistake.

Bezzecchi finished 1.675s behind his team-mate in third, giving Aprilia two riders on the podium. Ogura marked his return from injury with an excellent fourth place after overtaking Álex Márquez late in the race.

Bagnaia was sixth and scored his first points since July’s German GP. Johann Zarco placed seventh as the leading Honda rider, ahead of Fermín Aldeguer and Brad Binder, who took the final Sprint point in ninth.

Diogo Moreira and Raúl Fernández were both handed double long-lap penalties for jumping the start. Moreira eventually finished 16th, one position ahead of MotoGP rookie Toprak Razgatlıoğlu.

Franco Morbidelli was the first retirement after crashing without assistance. Acosta later joined him on the retirement list following the decisive Turn 2 incident.

The Austrian GP takes place on Sunday at 13:00 UK time.
