Rafael Câmara will make his Formula 1 debut with Haas in 2027, joining Oliver Bearman after the American team confirmed a multi-year agreement with the 21-year-old Ferrari Driver Academy graduate on Thursday, October 15. His promotion marks the culmination of a career that began in Recife, Brazil, progressed through a long rivalry with Kimi Antonelli and produced consecutive championships in Formula Regional and Formula 3.

Câmara arrives in F1 as one of the most highly rated young drivers developed by Ferrari in recent years. He is currently leading the 2026 Formula 2 championship with Invicta Racing, having already secured the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship and the 2025 FIA Formula 3 title.

His route to the top has not been entirely straightforward. Unlike Antonelli, who advanced rapidly through the junior categories and reached Formula 1 with Mercedes in 2025, Câmara spent an additional season in Formula Regional before beginning a run of championship-winning performances. That decision proved important in his development.

The Brazilian will replace Esteban Ocon at Haas, becoming Bearman’s teammate and giving Brazil two full-time Formula 1 drivers alongside Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto.

Who is Rafael Câmara?

Born on May 5, 2005, in Recife, Pernambuco, Rafael Câmara grew up in a family with an existing connection to motorsport. His grandmother, Niege Rossiter, was a pioneering figure in Recife’s racing scene during the 1960s, although his own introduction to competition came through his father and older brother.

A family friend had begun taking his son karting, encouraging Câmara’s father to try the sport with his eldest child. When his brother eventually stopped racing, Rafael asked for an opportunity of his own. He began driving at the Kartódromo do Tamboril shortly after reaching the minimum age.

The young Brazilian quickly developed into a leading karting prospect, eventually moving to Europe to compete against the strongest drivers of his generation.

His final international karting season in 2021 was particularly successful. Câmara won the WSK Champions Cup and WSK Super Master Series, while finishing runner-up in the CIK-FIA European Championship behind Antonelli.

That rivalry would continue as both drivers moved into single-seater racing.

Câmara’s rivalry with Kimi Antonelli

Antonelli and Câmara were among the outstanding karting talents of their generation, and their careers remained closely connected during the transition to Formula 4 and Formula Regional.

Both entered single-seater competition in 2022, although Antonelli enjoyed the more immediate success. The Mercedes junior dominated the Italian and German Formula 4 championships before moving on to Formula Regional, where he continued his winning run.

Câmara’s first season was competitive but less dominant. He finished second in the Formula 4 UAE Championship and third in both Italian F4 and ADAC Formula 4, establishing himself as a consistent front-runner without securing a championship.

In 2023, the pair again competed in Formula Regional, where Antonelli won the European title. Câmara finished fifth in the championship and third in the Middle East series.

The Brazilian subsequently remained in Formula Regional for another season rather than immediately progressing to Formula 3.

That extra year would become a turning point. While Antonelli moved directly to Formula 2 in 2024, Câmara established himself as the leading driver in the Formula Regional European Championship.

The contrast illustrates two different routes to Formula 1. Antonelli’s extraordinary early results accelerated his progression, while Câmara developed through additional experience before demonstrating the consistency and race management required to win championships.

Ferrari spotted Câmara’s potential before his single-seater debut

Ferrari recognised Câmara’s potential during his final karting season and recruited him to its driver academy in late 2021.

The Brazilian was selected following an extensive evaluation at Maranello, which included physical and cognitive assessments, simulator work and driving tests in Formula 4 machinery.

He joined the programme ahead of his 2022 single-seater debut, beginning a partnership that would shape the next five years of his career.

Ferrari provided coaching, technical support and development opportunities as Câmara progressed through the junior categories. The programme also allowed him to learn from an organisation that had previously helped Charles Leclerc and Oliver Bearman reach Formula 1.

The relationship became increasingly important in 2026, when Ferrari supported his campaign for a race seat with Haas.

Speaking during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur confirmed that Maranello was actively supporting Câmara’s Formula 1 ambitions, including a programme of tests in previous-generation machinery.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO reported from the Dutch Grand Prix, Ferrari’s involvement extended beyond its usual academy programme and formed part of the preparation for a potential 2027 promotion.

Formula Regional title in 2024 changes Câmara’s career

Câmara’s decision to remain in Formula Regional paid off in 2024, when he returned to the European championship with Prema Racing.

He established himself as the championship’s leading contender, combining the speed he had already demonstrated in qualifying with improved consistency and race management.

The season also showed his ability to learn from setbacks. At Imola, difficulties managing his tyres cost him a potential victory, but he responded at the following round in Barcelona with a much stronger performance.

He eventually secured the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship, his first major title in single-seater racing.

The achievement was important not simply because it added a trophy to his record. It demonstrated that Câmara could sustain a championship campaign across different circuits and conditions, rather than relying exclusively on outright qualifying speed.

The title also gave Ferrari confidence to move him into FIA Formula 3 for 2025.

Câmara dominates Formula 3 in his rookie season

Câmara joined Trident for the 2025 FIA Formula 3 Championship and immediately established himself as the driver to beat.

He began the season with an exceptional qualifying record, taking pole position in four of the first five rounds. His ability to produce fast laps under pressure quickly became one of his defining characteristics.

The Brazilian eventually recorded five pole positions and four Feature Race victories, winning in Melbourne, Sakhir, Barcelona and Budapest.

His performance was particularly impressive because all four victories came from pole position, demonstrating an ability to convert qualifying speed into race results.

Câmara clinched the championship at the penultimate round in Hungary, becoming the first driver in the modern FIA Formula 3 era to secure the title with one event remaining.

The achievement confirmed his status as one of Ferrari’s strongest young prospects and earned him promotion to Formula 2 with Invicta Racing for 2026.

His F3 campaign also reinforced the contrast with Antonelli. While the Mercedes driver had reached Formula 1 through an accelerated development programme, Câmara was now building his case through championship victories.

Formula 2 in 2026: speed, mistakes and a title challenge

Câmara’s move to Formula 2 placed him in a more demanding environment, with more powerful machinery, complex tyre management and greater strategic variation between races.

Driving for Invicta Racing, he quickly demonstrated that his qualifying ability had survived the step up.

He secured pole positions at several circuits, including Monaco, where one of his laps became a defining example of his determination and speed.

After damaging his rear suspension against the barriers early in qualifying, Câmara returned to the track following repairs and produced a pole-position lap on his second flying attempt.

However, the season also exposed areas where he needed to improve.

Mistakes involving tyre preparation and race management cost him opportunities in Monaco and Montreal. Rather than allowing those setbacks to derail his campaign, Câmara continued collecting strong results and gradually moved into championship contention.

His performances in Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps demonstrated his ability to turn qualifying pace into victories, while his results in Azerbaijan proved decisive in the title battle.

Following the Baku round, Câmara moved into the Formula 2 championship lead with 207 points, seven ahead of Nikola Tsolov and 18 clear of Alexander Dunne.

The championship remains undecided, with the remaining rounds scheduled for Qatar and Abu Dhabi, subject to the situation affecting events in the Middle East.

Câmara will therefore enter Formula 1 in 2027 regardless of whether he completes his Formula 2 season with another championship.

How Câmara impressed Haas at Portimão

Câmara’s results in the junior categories established his credentials, but his Formula 1 testing programme provided Haas with direct evidence of his ability to adapt to the machinery.

He began testing Ferrari’s 2025 SF-25 in May 2026 at the Hungaroring. Further sessions followed at Barcelona, Mugello and Imola, giving him valuable experience with Formula 1 systems, braking performance, power-unit management and technical procedures.

Ferrari’s programme was designed to accelerate his preparation for a potential promotion, while Haas organised its own evaluation at Portimão in Portugal.

The American team assessed Câmara alongside Leonardo Fornaroli and Ryō Hirakawa, using Oliver Bearman’s performance as a reference.

The test was especially important because Haas was considering several candidates to replace Ocon, including drivers with considerably more Formula 1 experience.

Câmara impressed with his speed and adaptation to an unfamiliar circuit and car.

According to GRANDE PRÊMIO’s reporting on Gene Haas’s interest in the Brazilian, the team’s owner became an important supporter of his candidacy after the Portimão evaluation.

Team principal Ayao Komatsu also placed significant emphasis on the Brazilian’s ability to work with engineers, adapt quickly and deliver consistent performance rather than simply produce a single fast lap.

Câmara’s preparation continued in September, when he returned to Ferrari’s SF-25 at Imola.

The combination of his junior-category results, Ferrari backing and Formula 1 test performances eventually established him as the favourite for the Haas seat.

Câmara declares himself ready for Formula 1

As speculation surrounding his future intensified, Câmara made clear that he believed he was prepared for the next step.

The Brazilian said the experience had helped him understand the demands of Formula 1 and improve his preparation.

“Yes. I don’t see why I wouldn’t be ready,” Câmara said when asked whether he could compete in Formula 1 in 2027.

He acknowledged that the championship would bring greater responsibilities outside the cockpit, but argued that the fundamental challenge of driving a racing car remained familiar.

“Inside the car, you do your job and always try to get as much out of it as possible. That is what I enjoy most,” he explained.

Câmara also described a Formula 1 opportunity as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.

“If I am in F1 in 2027, it will also be a dream fulfilled, because you work your whole life for that opportunity,” he said.

His remarks came before Haas made its final decision, at a time when the Brazilian was still competing against other candidates for the position.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO reported in September, Câmara believed the additional testing had helped prepare him for the step up.

Haas confirms Câmara for 2027 alongside Oliver Bearman

The final obstacle disappeared on October 15, when Haas announced that Câmara would replace Ocon on a multi-year agreement.

The decision followed months of negotiations and evaluations, with Ferrari’s support and Câmara’s performance in testing playing important roles.

His promotion also gives Haas an unusual driver pairing: two young competitors developed through Ferrari’s academy.

Bearman entered Formula 1 full-time in 2025 after impressing during his substitute appearance for Ferrari at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Câmara will now follow a similar development pathway, although his own route has included championship titles in Formula Regional and Formula 3.

The move also means Brazil will have two full-time drivers on the Formula 1 grid for the first time since 2016, when Felipe Massa and Felipe Nasr represented the country.

Gabriel Bortoleto will continue racing for Audi, while Câmara begins his career with Haas.

The official confirmation of Câmara’s Haas contract completes a journey that began in Brazilian karting and developed through Ferrari’s junior programme.
