Toto Wolff assured that Mercedes will not relive an internal feud like the one that defined Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s relationship between 2014 and 2016. The Team Principal stated he learned valuable lessons from that era and made it clear that, should George Russell and Kimi Antonelli push their title battle beyond reasonable limits, he is fully prepared to bench or drop one of them.

Mercedes is enjoying a stellar campaign in the 2026 Formula 1 season. Under the newly introduced technical regulations, the Brackley squad has claimed eight victories in the opening 11 races. Antonelli has emerged as the championship favorite, sitting comfortably atop the Drivers’ standings with six wins, while Russell holds third place, trailing his teammate by 59 points—with Hamilton sandwiched between them.

Despite the dominance, Wolff underscored that track success will never take precedence over internal team harmony. When pressed on whether he foresaw a risk of re-entering a toxic fight similar to the Hamilton-Rosberg fallout, the Mercedes chief was unequivocal.

“I won’t allow it. It will never happen to me again,” he declared to Dutch outlet RacingNews365.

“That will never happen to the team again. Plain and simple. I will take a driver out of the car if it comes to that,” he emphasized.

Hamilton and Rosberg engaged in one of the most fierce head-to-head rivalries in modern Formula 1 history. Between 2014 and 2016, they went toe-to-toe for three consecutive World Championship titles, collided multiple times on track, and fostered a toxic environment within Mercedes—a saga that peaked with Rosberg’s 2016 title triumph and subsequent shock retirement.

With the Silver Arrows restored to the top step of F1, expectations were high for Russell coming into the season, given his seniority and experience. However, the Briton has been outpaced by the breakout performance of rookie phenom Antonelli. Furthermore, a string of reliability issues has hampered Russell’s championship fight, allowing Hamilton to split the pair in the standings.

Despite measures to keep the peace, Wolff has already had to manage early sparks between his drivers. During the Sprint Race at the Canadian Grand Prix, the two fought wheel-to-wheel for the lead, resulting in Antonelli being pushed onto the grass after a defensive move by Russell—prompting a furious radio message from the teenager. Following the race, the team convened behind closed doors to cool tempers and reinforce the rules of engagement.

Formula 1 is currently on its summer break. The series resumes its 2026 season activities from August 21 to 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
